Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

To provide Bachelor of Multimedia (Honours)or Masters students with advanced skills in the presentation of their ideas, explorations and research in their chosen area of specialisation in multimedia and to encourage contact and the exchange of knowledge with practitioners in the industry.

To provide Bachelor of Multimedia Systems (Honours) or Masters students with advanced skills in the presentation of their ideas, explorations and research in their chosen area of specialisation in multimedia and to encourage contact and the exchange of knowledge with practitioners in the industry. MMS4403A Multimedia Research Seminar A (to be offered in Semester 1) in conjunction with MMS4404 Multimedia Research Seminar B (to be offered in Semester 2) replaces MMS4403 Multimedia Research Seminar as it is deemed necessary to increase the unit workload from 6 points to 12 points in order to provide students with more comprehensive skills in the preparation and presentation of their research including the formal submission of a paper for a refereed conference.

Objectives

  1. Knowledge of a wide variety of multimedia applications in contemporary use
  2. Knowledge of contextual applications of the theoretical frameworks developed in Introduction to Multimedia Research
  3. Understanding of the social, cultural, organisational and business contexts within which multimedia is utilised
  4. Understanding of the nature of the multimedia industry and the many roles they will undertake in it
  5. Understanding of the legal, ethical and philosophical issues related to the areas and delivery of multimedia products and services

  1. Attitudes to interact successfully and purposefully with peers, clients, users and other professionals
  2. Attitudes to function effectively in a multi-disciplinary and/or group environment.

  1. Skills to communicate at a professional level to clients, users and peer practitioners
  2. Skills to present their ideas, research and exploratory study before peers and practitioners in an industry-standard mode and format

Unit Content

Summary (06 Aug 2004, 2:15pm)

This unit comprises an exploration of industry links to a student's chosen area of specialisation in multimedia which contributes towards the Bachelor of Multimedia Systems (Honours) or Masters degree. Students will complete and present two research papers; participate in the organisation of guest lecturers, as well as attend seminars and presentations organised by the other students.

Teaching Methods

Strategies of Teaching (06 Aug 2004, 2:17pm)

Students will be required to attend one 2 hour seminar per week. Students will be required to prepare and present two individual oral presentations based on research in multimedia areas of interest to themselves or the group. Students will contribute to the group organisation of visits by industry professionals.

Teaching Methods Relationship to Objectives (06 Aug 2004, 2:18pm)

Students will engage in a combination of self-directed learning and research activities (C 1, C2, C3, C5, P2), discussion and consultation with peers and industry practitioners within seminars as organiser, presenter and participant (C3, C4, C5, P1, P2, P3, A1, A2, S1, S2, S3), and presentation of research (P1, P2, P3, S2).

Assessment

Strategies of Assessment (06 Aug 2004, 2:19pm)

Students will be required to complete two research papers and present their findings before an audience of peers (C5, P1, P2, A1, S2). The papers may be on any current multimedia topic of interest to the individual and/or group (C2, A2) - 80% of assessment. Students will also be required to contribute to the organisation and management of guest lecturers according to the needs and interests of the group (C1, C2, C3, C4, P1, A1, S3) - 20% of assessment.

The subject will be offered in Semester 1 requiring an average of 12 hours per week. The tasks involved will comprise a combination of attendance at seminars, individual research and consultation with subject co-ordinators.
