Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

MMS3409 Advanced Principles of 3D [AP3D ]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This unit complements the basic 3D theories covered in MMS2405 Foundations in 3D by introducing concepts for planning animation sequences, developing the required resources and executing advanced projects in 3D animation. These skills can be applied to the high-end field of special effects and complex organic character animation for computer games and motion pictures.

Reasons for Change (29 Jul 2004, 09:07am)

29/07/04 To allow students changing from the Bachelor of Multimedia degree to the new Bachelor of Multimedia Systems to undertake this unit as an elective while maintaining course progression.

Objectives

Knowledge and Understanding (Cognitive Domain Objectives) (31 May 2004, 3:06pm)

  1. have knowledge of organic character animation techniques
  2. have knowledge of the techniques applied to facial animation
  3. have knowledge of compositing 3D special effects for video and television
  4. understanding of 3D surfaces, mapping, texturing and lighting theory suitable for 3D characters and scenes
  5. extended understanding of the 3D spatial environment and taxonomy of 3D

Attitudes, Values and Beliefs (Affective Domain Objectives) (31 May 2004, 3:08pm)

  1. appreciation of physiology in the use of organic animation systems
  2. appreciation of the different animation systems for the creation of organic motion
  3. appreciate adopted theories and practices for complex 3D modeling and animation techniques including production pipelines
  4. identify characteristics of the native scripting language which supports animation techniques in the 3D environment

Practical Skills (Psychomotor Domain Objectives) (31 May 2004, 3:09pm)

  1. replicate the movement of organic structures in electronic 3D form
  2. reproduce physical materials for photo realistic modeling
  3. imitate real world animation in the virtual 3D world

Unit Content

Summary (31 May 2004, 3:10pm)

Students will gain planning, texturing, rigging, lighting and animation skills in order to undertake advanced 3D animation projects. This unit is designed to complement the skills developed in MMS2405 Foundations of 3D relating to 3D design, modeling and theory. Students will be introduced to the concept of a production pipelining and pre-visualisation techniques designed to streamline the animation process. The unit will focus on advanced theories and techniques of animating characters using 3D software packages and integrating the resulting output using other Digital Media software.

Teaching Methods

Assessment

Strategies of Assessment (31 May 2004, 3:14pm)

Assessment Relationship to Objectives (31 May 2004, 3:16pm)

Assessment 1? Planning for Animation will test unit objectives (C 1; A1, 3; and S1-3). Assessment 2 ? Preparing Organic Models for Animation 30% will be designed to test unit objectives (C1, 3, 4; and A 1-3; P1-3; and S1-3). The Assessment 3 - Animation Project 40% will test all objectives (C1-5; A1-4; P1-3; and S 1-3).
