The School of Multimedia Systems currently has a compulsory full year (12 point) multimedia studio unit in the third year of all degree programs, each of which currently commences in semester 1. This proposal is intended to transform these full year studio units into a sequence of two single semester units to improve course flexibility. In addition it is the school's intention to have these two units as a common project structure across all degrees to facilitate (where the opportunity arises) cross-disciplinary team creation and access to a wider set of skills within a team. This proposal also rationalises SMS' studio/project offerings at the third level. This sequence of units aims to build on the students' knowledge of basic concepts from previous years, by introducing them to more advanced tools for multimedia systems, and developing further their understanding of the multimedia development process and the tools and techniques used to manage and control it. The sequence content will be integrated closely with that of the other core units in the degree programs. This first unit concentrates on the initial systems design phase and the development of a system prototype23/07/2003 - MMS3407 will be introduced as core for the Bachelor of Multimedia Systems in 2004
The principal development process focus of the unit will be on the social, legal and business context in which multimedia developers and development companies must operate. As with all studio units, students will undertake a mixture of formal lectures and seminars, tutorials and laboratory sessions, demonstrations and studio work. They will be required to undertake project planning, documentation and development work, both by themselves and in groups.
Students will work in teams on the development of an application/exhibition for a client who may be either internal or external to Monash. Project teams will use project planning/management skills, and design and build a prototype of the project using appropriate software processes and methodologies. Students will integrate multimedia, programming, business and technical knowledge in the development process.
Requirements are fulfilled by the team producing an identified set of deliverables, usually a project proposal, project plan and feasibility study, a system specification, and finally a prototype. The team must ensure that each deliverable is completed on schedule. Each member of the team must demonstrate a significant contribution to the team effort, and display a sense of responsibility for the project outcome.
The assessment in this unit will consist of three major tasks which will include group and individual components.
Assessment 1 Concept Outline, Process Diary and Research 30%
Assessment 2 Detailed Project Documentation and Diary 30%
Assessment 3 Major Project or Prototype, Presentation and Diary 40%
The final grade will be achieved by adding all the individual components.
The assessment tasks in this unit will address the learning objectives in the following manner.
Assessment 1 Concept Outline, Process Diary and Research will cover learning objectives C 1; P 2, 4, 5; A 1; S 1-2.
Assessment 2 Detailed Project Documentation and Diary will cover learning objectives C 1-2; P 1, 2, 4, 5; A 1; S 1-2.
Assessment 3 Major Project or Prototype, Presentation and Diary will cover learning objectives C 1-2; P 1, 3, 5; A 1; S 1-2.
As Studio 3A encompasses a great variety of projects, the software requirements are numerous. In general, students will require access to development software that is the same as virtually all units they have studied, however it does not need to be in all labs or studios. In general, the software must encompasses:
