The Multimedia Ethics unit is a first year, second semester unit within the Bachelor of Multimedia Systems degree. This is a compulsory unit within the Applications, Programming and Games Development majors of the Bachelor of Multimedia Systems degree to be introduced in 2004. The unit focuses on ethical issues pertaining to the uses and practices of multimedia. It will engender an understanding of ethical theories, their relevance to electronic societies and their applications in individual and professional practices. It will develop an awareness of current ethical issues and debates as well as an understanding of the social implications of information and communication technologies. This unit offers an opportunity to discuss topical issues pertaining to ethics, multimedia, the individual and society and to understand these issues in their various contexts. The knowledge base from first year will provide a sound basis for future research and ongoing learning.

Objectives

Practical Skills (Psychomotor Domain Objectives) (21 Nov 2004, 2:39pm)

  1. Locate and analyse appropriate resources from a range of sources relating to ethical issues in multimedia
  2. Make oral presentations to a group based on multimedia ethics
  3. Participate in group debates on topics of relevance to a variety of ethical issues
  4. Produce an essay which analyses an ethical issue from one of the major areas of study
  5. Produce written responses to examination questions on topics of relevance to a variety of ethical issues

Teaching Methods

Strategies of Teaching (21 Nov 2004, 2:13pm)

The unit content will be disseminated to students through lectures. Tutorials will provide the forum for general class discussion/debate and will also include a series of formal, structured group debates.

Teaching Methods Relationship to Objectives (21 Nov 2004, 2:41pm)

Lectures will provide introductory knowledge on a range of topics pertaining to multimedia and ethics and will aim to provoke further thought, analysis, discussion and debate (C1-5; P1-P4; A1-7). Tutorials will provide a forum for discussion and debate of the major areas of study (P3; A3; A4; S1-3). Students will write an analytical essay on one of these areas, thereby further expanding their knowledge of this topic and the development of their research and analytical skills (A3, P1,P4; A6). The ability to debate an issue objectively and the ability to work with a team will be developed by means of a group debate (P3; A3, A6, A7; S1-3). Students will undertake a written examination which will demonstrate their knowledge and analytical skills acquired during lectures, tutorial discussions, debates and individual research(C1-5; A1-7; P5).

Students will undertake a written examination on a range of areas pertaining to ethical issues (C1-5; A1-7; P5). Students will write an analytical essay on one of the major topic areas, thereby developing an in-depth knowledge of this area and expanding their research and analytical skills (P4; A3, A6). The ability to debate an issue objectively and the ability to work with a team will be developed by means of a group debate (P3; A3, A6, A7; S1-3).
