The field of knowledge management offers a range of challenges for modern information professionals. These benefits may include leveraging core business competencies, accelerating innovation, improving process cycle time, improving decision-making, and building sustainable competitive advantage.

The objective of the unit is to conduct an in-depth investigation of the theory and practice of knowledge management in relation to the current social, organizational and industrial environments. Students will focus on current key issues in knowledge management and examine topics including the nature and origins of organisational knowledge, organisational learning, organisational memory, organizational capabilities and competences and knowledge work. The unit aims to build students' understanding of the impact of these issues in resolving problems and taking advantage of opportunities relating to the exploration of organisational knowledge assets.

The unit will draw extensively on current industry practices with many of the topics and case studies identified by practitioners. Moreover the unit will explore the links between the planning and implementation of knowledge management systems and the planning, development and implementation of information systems.

A unit outline detailing the specific topics to be covered in a specific offering of this unit would be available to students from the unit leader two weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
