The new Masters of Information Systems course includes units covering a number of advanced topics from the different specialisations making up the degree. This unit covers advanced topics for the Business Intelligence (BI) specialisation. It is being introduced to allow professionals with basic skills in the area of Business Intelligence to pursue studies at a much more advanced level.
At the completion of this unit the students should have the knowledge and understanding of:
K1. Theories that help to explain managerial information behaviour.
K2. Advanced issues in development of BI systems.
K3. Emerging technologies for the development of BI systems.
K4. Organisational and cultural issues in relation to the development and use of BI systems.
Should have developed attitudes which allow you to:
A1. Communicate, foster and create realistic expectations of the role of BI systems.
A2. Adopt a critical approach to vendor and analyst claims regarding the value and role of BI systems.
A3. Appreciate the contributions of theory to practice in the planning, development and implementation of BI systems in organisations.
Should have the skills to:
P1. Appropriately assess the issues in relation to the adoption of BI systems.
P2. Apply theories to improve BI practice in organisations.
S1. Students should understand the importance of the various styles of communication required for different stakeholders.
This subject addresses several current topics of both theoretical and professional interest in Business Intelligence. The topics and issues addressed will change from year to year to reflect academic staff availability, visiting international academics, and the dynamics of professional practice. As a guide, the topics covered will include the following:
A unit outline detailing the specific topics to be covered in a specific offering of this unit would be available to students from the unit leader two weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
A reading list for each offering of this unit will be compiled from various journal, conference and industry papers relevant to the topics covered. Example journals might include:

Hi-Tech lecture theatre for 40 students for 3 hrs x 13 weeks
1 EFT lecturer for 3 contact hours per week for 13 weeks. Plus teaching assistance for hours proportional to enrolment.
The library already has an excellent collection including electronic and paper based journals. A Library Impact Statement has been submitted for the new unit.
