Obsolete Reasons for Introduction
This is a foundation unit that aims to provide the student with an understanding of the database management systems (DBMSs) that underlie business applications. A theoretical introduction as well as hands-on experience are required to take advantage of the sophistication of the modern DBMS.The approach of this unit will be to use the core features of the DBMS without taking advantage of CASE or application development tools. This will provide the student with a deeper appreciation of the internals of the DBMS, and confidence that optimisation of code generated by application development tools is both possible and desirable.The theoretical and practical aspects of Structured Query Language (SQL) in the context of the relational database model will dominate the unit content. Development of usable schemae and optimisation through the use of indexes and user-defined data types will be a second major theme.Finally, this unit will provide an introduction to administration of the DBMS in a multi-user environment, and the role of the Database Administrator (DBA) relative to the system administrator. Practical experience in this area will be advantageous to students in the job market.This unit will be one of the core units in the Bachelor of Information Technology.
