The unit is core to the Knowledge Management specialisation in the MIMS. It aims to present a coherent view of knowledge and knowledge management from a multidisciplinary perspective. Students should gain an appreciation of the sources of unstructured and semi-structured knowledge in the organisation and should be aware of current techniques, which will permit this knowledge to be applied within the organisation. The unit presents a comprehensive model of the knowledge management process from an organisational and technological perspectives. Students will have an opportunity to explore current approaches to knowledge management in a context of a variety of case studies.

Students will have knowledge and understanding of:

C1. The meanings applied to the terms knowledge and knowledge management

C2. A range of approaches that may support knowledge management

C3. The stages and processes that define good knowledge management practice

C4. The techniques from information systems and artificial intelligence for representing and manipulating knowledge

C5. The techniques from document management for evaluating procedural knowledge and representing this in workflow controls

C6. The concepts from records management to support evaluating ownership of knowledge and validity of knowledge processes

C7. The extent to with modern technology can support knowledge management processes
