Reasons for Change FEC4/03GCO9804 is an existing unit.This proposal is to add BUS9520 as an alternative prerequisite. BUS9520 is considered to be equivalent to the existing prerequisite GCO9801. BUS9520 is a core unit in the Master of Business Systems and is a prohibited combination with GCO9801.

Previous:

The Graduate Diploma of Computing and the Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT) have been reviewed and restructured jointly by all schools involved in teaching it. The changes have been designed to ensure smoother movement of students between the Graduate Diploma of Computing and the MAIT, and in light of changed immigration rules. This unit is being modified to add an on-campus offering for this revised program.

An on-campus offering is added to GCO9804 in preparation for the Gippsland on-campus offering of the MAIT.

Deletion of pre-requisite. The topic of embedded SQL has been excluded from GCO9804 because it is more appropriate in the commercial programming unit. Thus, no programming pre-requisite is required any more for GCO9804.

Current (Semester 1, 2006):

The reason of the syllabus change in this version is because it is an equivalent unit to the core unit, FIT1004, which is introduced in Semester 1, 2006, as part of the BITS degree.

GCO9804 offers theoretical knowledge and practical applications for the use of database technology to support a wide range of Information Systems in a variety of applications. The use of database technology for the persistent storage of information, is a vital skill to aquire to enable students to be competitive and informed in their further study or future employment.

Objectives

Knowledge and Understanding (Cognitive Domain Objectives) (21 Apr 2006, 2:12pm)

At the completion of this unit students will have knowledge and understanding of:

  1. the major objectives of database technology;
  2. the relational model for databases and competing models;
  3. the phases of the database development life cycle and their correspondence to the phases of the system development lifecycle;
  4. the techniques and tools to design and implement a database suitable for an information system;
  5. a database retrieval and manipulation language;
  6. methods to in put place physical structures to permit efficient operation of a database;
  7. the relationship of database technology to data warehousing and data mining;
  8. the role of a database administrator;

  1. Appreciate the privacy issues relating to storage of data in a database.
  2. Practice ethical behaviour when developing, implementing and using a database.

This unit will provide an introduction to the concepts of database management. This will include planning, designing, using and implementing a data model using an enterprise-scale relational database system. Methods and techniques will also be presented to populate, retrieve, update and implement integrity features on data in the implemented database system.

This unit will provide an introduction to the principles and concepts of database systems their organisation and management. The issues of physical and logical data description are addressed. Various data models,and a query language, are introduced. This will include planning, designing, using and implementing a data model using an enterprise-scale relational database system. Strategies of Teaching (21 Apr 2006, 2:15pm)

Teaching will be conducted through lectures and tutorials which will include discussion groups and the use of commercial database management software. The specified reading will support the lecture and tutorial activity. The unit will also be taught by OCL using a range of web based and printed materials.

Teaching Methods Relationship to Objectives (21 Apr 2006, 2:15pm)

Lectures: The lectures will introduce the theory and explore each topic addressing objectives 1 to 10. Laboratory sessions: Laboratory sessions will provide an environment in which material presented in lectures will be reviewed and put into practice, where possible. Students will undertake exercises that will enable them to create and maintain a database addressing objectives 1 to 10.

Assessment

Strategies of Assessment (21 Apr 2006, 2:15pm)

Assessment will include two practical assignments based on case studies and a three hour exam based on both the theorectical and practical content of the subject.

Assessment Relationship to Objectives (21 Apr 2006, 2:16pm)

Assessment will consist of one three hour examination primarily designed to test theoretical and practical knowledge, and two practical assignments; both of which must be attempted. In arriving at the final grade for this subject, the examination will carry 60% of the result and the practical work will carry 40% WORKLOADS

Workloads

Workload Requirement (21 Apr 2006, 2:16pm)

12 hours per week. Contact time for on-campus modes will usually be four hours per week. The breakdown of contact time into lectures, tutorials, laboratories, workshops and studio sessions will be set individually for each campus.

On-campus offerings will require a high-tech lecture theatre with data display and internet connection, with a PC and facility to plug in a laptop, for two hours per week throughout the semester. Equivalent requirements for summer semester offerings.

Tutorial Requirements (21 Apr 2006, 2:17pm)

Will be set according to the individual needs of each campus offering. Tutorials will normally be scheduled in flexible learning spaces with access to networked computers, discussion and group-work facilities (flexible desk arrangements, white boards, data projectors).
