Knowledge and Understanding (Cognitive Domain Objectives) (13 Sep 2006, 08:43am)

At the completion of this unit, students will : Have a knowledge of the fundamentals of spreadsheets which will provide them with an understanding of spreadsheet modelling presentation and analysis using Excel. Have learnt the fundamentals of OO concepts. Have gained an understanding of the Excel object model. Have learnt how to create Excel macros. Have learnt the basics of programming including variables, data types, control structures, subroutines and functions. Have learnt to create custom dialog boxes and custom forms using VBA. Have the ability to create non-trivial applications using Visual Basic for Applications. Have an understanding of the Internet and XHTML.

This unit provides an introduction to the principles and practice of programming for business applications. This includes an overview of spreadsheet modelling and a detailed introduction to programming with Excel including general programming concepts, the syntax and semantics of a current business programming language, design and development of graphical user interfaces.

40% practical assignments, 60% formal examination (2.5 hours). Students must pass the examination in order to pass the unit.

Teaching Methods Relationship to Objectives (13 Sep 2006, 08:49am)

Lectures address themes such as recognising problem description and program design. Students be introduced to theory and concepts that provide an overview to the essence of programming in relation to problem solving and designing solutions to programming problems. The laboratory sessions will be used primarily, not to introduce new material, but to place the lecture material into a practical context. Students will develop systems involving programming and spreadsheet development in a GUI enviroment.

40% practical assignments, 60% formal examination (2.5 hours). Students must pass the examination in order to pass the unit.

Assessment Relationship to Objectives (13 Sep 2006, 08:51am)

Assignments and examinations will test the application of knowledge and concepts to demonstrate an understanding of spreadsheet modelling, design solutions for programming problems including those in relation to spreadsheet modelling, the creation and testing of solutions and the creation, analysis and debugging of programs.

On-campus classes will need access to a lecture theatre with data projection facilities, and preferably network access for 2 hours per week. (This unit is taught in conjunction with GCO1810.)

Laboratory Requirements (29 Mar 2004, 4:56pm)

Each group of 18 on-campus students will require access to a PC lab for tutorial/workshop sessions for 2 hours each week.
