Relevance of Unit (06 Nov 2003, 1:57pm)

Understanding of security concepts and awareness of security issues for networks and information are integral to knowledge about the operation of networks. This unit provides this knowledge in the Network Technology major in the Bachelor of IT, as a core unit, and is available as an elective to students in other majors.

OSI security architecture, security requirements, cryptopgraphy, digital signatures, certificates, security services, security standards and protocols, network security applications, system security, latest trends in security and security ethics

Handbook Summary (26 Apr 2006, 09:35am)

OSI security architecture, common information risks and requirements, operation of encryption techniques, digital signatures, public key infrastructure, authentication and non-repudiation; intrusion detection and response, firewall defense; privacy and ethics issues, security configurations to PC based applications, design of information systems with security compliance and security standards and protocols.

Teaching Methods

Teaching Methods Relationship to Objectives (22 Oct 2003, 11:39am)

  1. Unit book study guides and on-campus lectures: All objectives
  2. On-line unit material: Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9
  3. Tutorials and on-line discussion groups e.g. assignment, general and notices: All objectives
  4. Assignments: 8, 10, 11
  5. Final exam: All objectives

Each study guide describes the specific learning objectives, developing the detail of the broader unit objectives. These specific objectives will be achieved on a session by session basis. Students will be guided to achieve learning objectives by making use of study guide, text book, on-line reading material, lecturers, tutorials and discussion newsgroups. Achievement of learning objectives will be assessed by assignments and final examination.

Assessment

Assessment Relationship to Objectives (22 Oct 2003, 11:45am)

Assignments worth 40% will test all objectives. They will satisfy design, analysis and research related learning objectives. Objectives related to conceptual understanding will be tested while students complete the detail of the assignments.

The examination will test all learning objectives by assessing students' understanding, as well as their capacity to apply acquired knowledge to novel problems.

Workloads

Workload Requirement (22 Oct 2003, 11:50am)

Off-campus and on-campus learning: 12 hours per week, comprising working through study material, lectures, tutorials, recommended reading, private study, assignment preparation and communication with the lecturer and fellow students through email and newsgroups. On-campus students will satisfy some of this requirement with 2 hours attendance at lectures, and 2 hours attendance at laboratory sessions.
