The Unit Adviser has been updated, as have semester of offering, recommended reading and location of offering. As well, the prohibition with GCO1813 has been added. GCO2826 is intended only for students in the Bachelor of Cognitive Science but WES does not enforce the course level prohibition. This addition makes this explicit.
For FEC6/04: GCO2826 Analysis and Design for Multimedia is a core unit in the Bachelor of Cognitive Science (Fac. of Arts). GCO1811 used to have GCO1810 as a pre-requisite, but with BIT replacing BComp, that pre-requisite was cancelled, and no student is expected to ever do both as they are very similar. The changes made in prerequisites for will enable students doing either GCO1810 or GCO1811 to enrol in GCO2826.

ASCED Classification: 020305 Systems Analysis and Design
This unit will provide students with an introduction to systems analysis and design and give a broad overview of the main techniques commonly used for carrying out the analysis and specification of the design for an computer system. The unit will introduce students to the nature of systems analysis and design as a problem-solving activity, describe the key elements of analysis and design, and explain the place of the analysis and design phases within the system development life cycle. The unit will introduce students to the nature of modelling as an analytical and a communicative process. They will learn to create models that describe system specifications using the unified modelling language (UML). Further, students will learn to interpret and understand models created with traditional structured modelling techniques.
Major topics include:
* Systems analysis and design in context;
* Analysis and problem-solving;
* Fact-finding and data gathering;
* Systems analysis using UML;
* Systems design using UML.

On-campus students attend weekly lectures and tutorial sessions to achieve the objectives of the unit. Lectures will present theoretical concepts and examples for all objectives. Tutorials will give students opportunities to receive feedback on their understanding and implementation of the concepts and techniques covered by the unit.
Off-campus students receive detailed printed study materials, supplemented by web-based resources that lead them through the content of the unit. Students may communicate on matters related to the unit through the newsgroups.

Examination (3 hours): 60% - Other assessment modes: 40%
The examination will assess all objectives of the unit. The assignments will vary from offering to offering, but may test all objectives in the unit, particularly by encouraging research, reflection and practice. Assignments will serve as learning tools, not simply as assessment tools.

Working through the unit content and completing assessment tasks will require 12 hours per week for 13 weeks. On-campus students will allocate 2 hours to lectures and 2 hours to tutorial attendance each week.
