Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

FEC 5/03 Reasons for ChangeThe unit will be offered only in semester 1 in Malaysia. Frequency of offering has been adjusted to reflect this.FEC 3/03 Reasons for ChangeThe change of name is intended to reflect the change of position of the unit in the structure of Part 2 of the Monash College Diploma in Information Technology and the Bachelor of Information Technology. The content of the unit will not change but the name now more clearly describes it. The location of offering is also changed to allow implementation of the BIT in Malaysia.Original Reasons for IntroductionIn 1999 the Chair in Multimedia Technology was established at the School, and Professor Laurence Dooley appointed. Professor Dooley now heads the Faculty's Multimedia Research Group, one of the Faculty's five identified Research Strengths, to which many of the GSCIT staff contribute. Also in 1999, the report of the Faculty of Information Technology Review of GSCIT made the following recommendations:"The development of a discipline focus in multimedia technologies is recommended as best aligning with the school's plans and existing expertise, and as best meeting faculty needs. The recent appointment of a Chair in Multimedia Technology, based at GSCIT, together with previously existing multimedia expertise in the school, means that the new multimedia technology focus is a major strength of the school. The school can also take advantage of synergies between multimedia technologies and the school's existing expertise in distance education technologies. The development of a strong focus on multimedia technologies will fill a need at faculty and university level for programs in this rapidly-burgeoning area. This will complement the application-based, creative focus of the Bachelor of Multimedia offered on the Berwick campus."In order to establish a distinctive, discipline-focussed program at GSCIT, it will be necessary to introduce a new undergraduate degree program or restructure the existing one. It is suggested that one possible approach would be to establish a new and differently structured undergraduate degree. This would involve a generalist flexible first year (which can articulate into other degrees) at GSCIT, with students then having the option to move on to a second/third year specialisation either at GSCIT or at another campus. It is suggested that a specialised multimedia technology course, with some broader content, be established for offer on the Gippsland campus. The shift in emphasis towards specialised disciplines delivered by distance education, discussed above, could allow students to progress on to any specialisation without having to relocate."GCO1821 Introduction to Multimedia Technology is proposed as an elective unit in the Bachelor of Computing at Gippsland and a core unit in the proposed Bachelor of Multimedia Computing. The development of multimedia technology units by the Gippsland School of Computing & IT (GSCIT) is consistent with the school's strategic directions as identified by this review. GCO1821 introduces multimedia objects, hardware, applications, communications, software tools, and graphics and the contexts of their use. The unit is intended to equip students with necessary background to further develop conceptual understanding and practical skills provided in level 2 and 3 units. It is also intended that the unit will be an attractive elective for the students in other courses.

Reasons for Change (27 May 2004, 10:35am)

Implementation of the BIT in MUM is commencing in semester 2 instead of semester 1, consequently, the frequency of offering has had to be updated to reflect this.
