Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

FEC 5/03 Reasons for ChangeAdd Malaysia to locations of offering.FEC 3/03 Reasons for ChangeGCO1813 Information Systems 1 has been a core unit in the Bachelor of Computing since the inception of the degree. The unit introduces the context, purposes and activities of systems analysis and design.The Faculty of Information Technology is also proposing to provide the units for the Monash College Information Technology course, and to introduce the Bachelor of Information Technology. This unit is one of the proposed core units for Part 2 of the Monash College program, along with GCO2813 Information Systems 2 (shortly to have both name and content updated to Information Systems Design).This proposal serves several purposes. The first is to enter the unit into the Avatar system. The proposal also updates the name and content of the unit, and its location of offering. To date the unit has used structured analysis tools and methods. Whilst the unit will continue to survey the range of approaches used in industry, and to focus primarliy on analysis, this proposal seeks endorsement of a change to object-oriented analysis methods and tools.

Reasons for Change (03 Jul 2006, 4:46pm)

Summary (03 Jul 2006, 4:48pm)

ASCED Classification: 020305 Systems Analysis and Design

This unit will provide students with an introduction to systems analysis and design and give a broad overview of the main techniques commonly used for carrying out the analysis and specification of the design for an computer system. The unit will introduce students to the nature of systems analysis and design as a problem-solving activity, describe the key elements of analysis and design, and explain the place of the analysis and design phases within the system development life cycle. The unit will introduce students to the nature of modelling as an analytical and a communicative process. They will learn to create models that describe system specifications using the unified modelling language (UML). Further, students will learn to interpret and understand models created with traditional structured modelling techniques.

Major topics include:

* Systems analysis and design in context;

* Analysis and problem-solving;

* Fact-finding and data gathering;

* Systems analysis using UML;

* Systems design using UML.
