15/08/2013 Change learning objectives to learning outcomes.

9/09/13 - On behalf of CE, modified wording of objectives based on advice from Director Education Quality. Amended objectives to comply with AQF requirements.

7/07/2014 - Added FIT5135 as prohibition

15/12/2014 - Changed assessment to 50% exam / 50% in semester, to allow for introduction of graded quizzes and peer instruction with clickers. Effective Semester 1 2015.

3 April 2017: Adding reasons for Change on behalf of Chief Examiner. Examination hours updated to meet new University Examination Procedures. Effective S2 2017.

8 Feb 2019: Rephrase learning outcomes and synopsis to include architecture of the Internet and fundamental security concepts (these have always been part of the curriculum but were missing from the LOs)

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

19/11/2020: Admin - this unit was disestablished at FEC 5/20 on 12/11/2020 as it is no longer required.

FIT9135 is one of the foundation units for the Master of Information Technology postgraduate students. It prepares students so that they will understand the theoretical and practical aspects of providing computer solutions to real world problems.

The unit will introduce students to fundamentals of data and computer communications methods and techniques. It covers: ISO and TCP/IP layered protocols; physical layer concepts: data transmission methods, signal encoding and digital data communication techniques; data link control protocol, multiplexing methods; WAN and LAN networking fundamentals; internetworking and transport protocols; and basic concepts of network security.
