FIT9130 Systems analysis and design (03 Jul 2014, 12:15am) [ SYS ANALYSIS DESIGN (03 Jul 2014, 12:15am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This unit replaced two existing units, SYS5140 Systems Analysis and Design V and SYS4071 Systems Analysis and Design IV, which were taught in the previous Masters degree structure (MIS). FIT9130 is a foundation unit in MIMS.

Reasons for Introduction (03 Jul 2014, 12:15am)

Although based on an earlier unit (FIT9030), this is a largely new unit developed as a foundation unit in the Master of Business Information Systems to be introduced in 2014. The unit addresses foundational knowledge of techniques for designing information systems through requirements elicitation and conceptual modelling.

Reasons for Change (17 Sep 2020, 3:51pm)

Previous Change - This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

21 May, 2013 - The unit has been redesigned to provide foundational systems analysis and design knowledge as part of the Master of Business Information Systems degree commencing in 2014.

17/7/13 Correcting prohibitions. Effective Semester 1 2014.

12/8/13 - Modified objectives to learning outcomes for consistency with AQF requirements.

7/07/2014 - Added FIT5130 as prohibition and Malaysia to location of offering.

12/12/2016 - Changed the exam time from three hours + ten minutes reading time to two hours + 30 minutes reading and noting time in accordance with new University exams policy restricting exams to two hours duration. Change to take effect Semester 1, 2017.

26/6/2018 - Updated exam period from 2 hours with 30 minutes reading/noting time back to 3 hours. This unit is to allow more comprehensive examination of students' command of knowledge at the analysing, synthesising and evaluating levels of the Bloom's Taxonomy. Effective Semester 2, 2018 ?Grace Rumantir?

Adding to Grace's comments, the exam needs to cover both design thinking/theory as well as applied skills. The former is assessed using short answer questions for breadth and an essay question for depth. The latter are assessed using modelling exercises and ensure verification of skill acquisition. These assessment techniques have worked well in the past but do require time to complete an essay as well as complete modelling tasks for problems of sufficient complexity to assess skills adequately. Three hours allows this more adequately than two. ?Rob Meredith?

14/02/2019 - Updated exam period back to 2 hours with 30 minutes readings based on improving and revising exam questions that could assess the key points and deep understanding of students with more effective and efficient questions within 2 hours.

19/02/2019 - Admin - 30 minute reading and noting time is not required as advised by the CE. The exam is to be 2 hours only (with the standard 10 minute reading and noting time).

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

3/02/2020: Pari Delir- the 2 hour studio was changed to 2 hours tutorial to match the timetabled classes. Also, the additional requirement for a studio was removed.

17/09/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (03 Jul 2014, 12:15am)

This is a foundation unit within the 2014 version of the Master of Business Information Systems. Students will have knowledge equivalent to a graduate from a cognate bachelors degree of designing information systems through requirements elicitation and conceptual modelling techniques.

Objectives

Objectives (03 Jul 2014, 12:15am)

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • select and use conceptual and logical modelling techniques to design an information system
  • select and use techniques to elicit requirements for an information system design
  • select and use approaches to the systems development lifecycle including the waterfall model and modern alternatives
  • assess and discuss the capabilities and limitations of an information system
  • communicate the requirements for the business functionality of an information system in terms of data required, data storage and processing to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
