FIT9008 is introduced as a recoding of the old GCO9805 to an FITxxxx coding. That unit was introduced for the Graduate Certificate in Computing (by Off-Campus Learning) and the Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT) in order to provide an introduction to computer programming. It assumes no prior programming experience.
This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.
30/11/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.
This is a core foundation unit for the Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT) and Graduate Certificate students. It replaces GCO9805 and is equivalent to FIT1002, which is a first year unit of study in the common core. Knowledge of programming is a fundamental activity underlying all computer systems. It is therefore considered an essential element of initial study for students interested in a future in Information Technology.
The unit aims to provide students with: an understanding of the computational process; skills in problem solving for programming; skills in design and construction of simple object-oriented programs using Java as the implementation language; a solid foundation for further programming study; and an understanding of the role/nature of professional programming practice.
At the completion of this unit students will have -
A theoretical and conceptual understanding of:
Developed attitudes that enable them to:
Developed the practical skills to:
Demonstrated the communication skills necessary to:
020103
This unit will provide students with an overview of programming and its role in problem-solving and strategies for meeting user requirements and for designing solutions to programming problems. The fundamental programming concepts of the memory model, data types, declarations, expressions and statements, control structures, block structure, modules, parameters and input and output will be applied within the context of objects, attributes, methods, re-use, information-hiding, encapsulation, event-handling and message-passing. Software engineering topics include maintainability, readability, testing, documentation and modularisation.
