FIT9001 Masters Transition Program (DISESTABLISHED FB 05/07) (13 Dec 2007, 11:04am) [MTP (04 Mar 2005, 10:13am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

Within the postdgraduate coursework programs of the Faculty of Information Technology, a high proportion of students are from non-English or English as a second language background. There is also a large cohort of International students who come from very different education systems to that provided here in Australia. As a result there is often a lack of research, critical thinking and professional skills (relating to language in particular) that cause problems of plagiarism and a reduced quality of written communication and oral presentation. The Faculty Working Party (DAC 5 / 02) recommended the introduction of a Masters Transition Program to all postgraduate programs. This unit is a '0' point unit (at no cost to the student) intended to address these issues of referencing skills, written and oral communication and learning styles and strategies to raise Masters students' awareness of these issues and to begin the process of development of these skills. The unit must be taken by students in their first semester enrolment. It is a hurdle requirement before they can enrol into their second semester units.

Reasons for Change (04 Mar 2005, 10:17am)

FIT9001 unit content for written and oral communnication was originally developed by the Language and Learning services unit. From subsequent student evaluations of the unit it is clear that we need to refine the content of both the written communication and oral communication modules to be more aligned to the student experience of studying their mainstream course.

Role of Unit (04 Mar 2005, 10:35am)

The role of FIT9001 is to provide an academic transition to study for students in course work masters degrees. The unit supports

students moving into postgraduate study for the first time, students returning to study from employment and a break from study, students studying in Australia for the first time.

All commencing postgraduate students need to re-evaluate their study approaches for this new level of study.

Relevance of Unit (04 Mar 2005, 10:32am)

FIT9001 supports the faculty push towards improving teaching and learning as this unit has a focus on enhancing studentlearning and assisting students develop professional communication strategies.
