Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This unit plays an important role in the Business Information Systems specialization of the MBIS degree, as well as in the Data Science stream in the MDS degree and a core unit in the MIT degree. The unit will provide students with a framework for understanding data warehousing in particular focusing on the evolutionary process of developing a data warehouse.

Reasons for Introduction (21 May 2013, 4:36pm)

Although based on two pre-existing units (FIT5093 and FIT5095), this new unit forms part of the core of the new Master of Business Information Systems.

Reasons for Change (17 Feb 2021, 3:10pm)

Previous change - This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

21 May, 2013 - This unit is a merger of the former FIT5095 Data Warehousing and FIT5093 Business Intelligence Applications units. The unit will first be offered in Semester 1, 2014.

17/7/13 Amended teaching mode, prerequisites and prohibitions. Effective Semester 1 2014.

12/8/13- Updated objectives to learning outcomes for consistency with AQF requirements.

22/10/2014 - Amended prerequisite requirements by adding 2015, FIT9xxx version of 2014, FIT5xxx foundation units. Approved at GPC 4/14 (Item 6.2).

12/12/2016 - Changed the exam time from three hours + ten minutes reading time to two hours + 30 minutes reading and noting time in accordance with new University exams policy restricting exams to two hours duration. Change to take effect from Semester 1, 2017.

12/06/2017: Admin - updating location of offering to reflect actual campus offerings at the ADE's request.

28/06/2018: Admin - updating assessment removing the 30 minutes reading and noting time on behalf of the CE.

26/11/2018: updating the unit objectives as well as the assessment breakdown.

14/02/2019: Removed incorrect prohibition (FIT5137)

24/9/2019: Admin - adding 10 minutes reading time to the overall exam duration as per University requirements.

11/11/2019: Removing disestablished prerequisites. Effective 2020.

4/5/2020: As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA195 effective Semester 2, 2020. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made.

21/09/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

    Synopsis (26 Nov 2018, 11:36pm)

    This unit is intended to provide students with a framework for understanding business intelligence systems as well as the provision of high quality, integrated data for decision support through data warehousing. The unit has a particular focus on the evolutionary process of developing data warehousing using relational database management systems, and multi-dimensional modelling for structuring business intelligence data. The unit also presents students with coverage of several important aspects of data warehousing, including architecture, design, implementation, and optimisation. The unit will present this material using relevant research, case studies and practical exercises. Students will develop data warehouse modelling and OLAP using relational database management systems.

    Windows or Mac OS computer able to run Oracle DBMS. Software will be available in student computer labs as well as for download and installation on personal devices.
