FIT5194 Computer based global project management - Disestablished (19 Nov 2020, 3:01pm) []

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (25 Jul 2012, 1:01pm)

Anecdotal evidence suggests that both industry and contemporary students seek a new approach in dealing with project management issues on a global scale, as well as in the use of the latest technology available. The Computer-based global project management unit is introduced to address these issues. In particular it addresses the issues in global project management (especially emphasised by the markets in Asia and Middle East countries) as well as the use of the latest technology (such as Microsoft Project Server combined with SQL, VBA, etc.) in managing projects. This unit will equip students with the theoretical knowledge of global management and introduce them to a variety of new computer based methods in managing global projects.

Reasons for Change (19 Nov 2020, 3:01pm)

This change to assessment has been implemented to address issues raised by students with the implementation of in semester class tests. Therefore the exam component has been introduced and set to 40%. Students had also requested that tutorial contact hours were not long enough so this has been set to 2 hours. The change is required for semester 1, 2015.

19/06/2017: Admin - Adding reasons for Change on behalf of Chief Examiner. Examination hours updated to meet new University Examination Procedures. Effective S1 2018.

29/06/2018: Admin - amendment to Assessment removing the 30 minutes reading and noting time and reverting to the standard 10 minutes reading and noting time, as per FEC Email Meeting 1/18.

24/9/2019: Admin - adding 10 minutes reading time to the overall exam duration as per University requirements.

19/11/2020: Admin - this unit was disestablished at FEC 5/20 on 12/11/2020 as it is no longer required.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (30 Jul 2012, 3:41pm)

The majority of our students, after graduating, will be involved in participating in or managing projects. Because of the global nature of today's business, the chances of being involved in global projects are almost certain.

This unit focuses on providing students with the understanding of a global approach to project management, theoretical and practical aspect of the methods and methodologies for achieving excellence in managing projects globally. Understanding of the diversity of global projects, and the ability to effectively use the methodologies underpinning the management of global projects, will provide students with a source of significant competitive advantage. The content deals with: trends in global project management; theory of program and portfolio project management; soft systems methodology and information management in global projects, etc. Well-known global case studies in global project management (i.e. Airbus, and others) will be discussed in the classes to enable students to gain an insight into pitfalls and explore solutions for problems in global projects. Exercises using Microsoft Project Server combined with the SQL and VBA, will provide the basis for further skill development tailored to students needs.

    Synopsis (30 Jul 2012, 3:45pm)

This unit together with FIT5057 provides a holistic approach to project management. The emphasis of this unit is on theoretical foundation of project management in global environment, and adequate level of understanding of skills necessary for people to be involved in and managing projects globally. The practical exercises and relevant case studies will familiarize students with as many of current issues/problems/solutions as possible, and thus increase their ability to recognize the potential pitfalls in managing projects globally and provide appropriate solutions for them.
