The option of high performing students undertaking a minor thesis in the professional masters program has been recently removed. Students who wish to attempt a minor thesis and progress to a higher degree by research must now do so through the masters honours programs. There is a remaining cohort of high performing students that are interested in the possibility of research but have not progressed to the stage that they will commit to a 24-point honours project. They may commit to a 12 point internship where they work with experienced researchers.
BoE 1/2012 identified that the entry requirement for this unit was not consistent with comparable types of units, e.g. reading units and need to be aligned with those. Reading units etc that have a variable assessment schedule generally require ADE approval. This has been rectified in the present amendment. Amendment to take effect Semester 1, 2013.
07/12/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.
FIT5182 adds to the Business Intelligence specialization in the MBIS program. Its role is to provide an avenue for high performing coursework students to experience being part of a research project. Students who complete FIT5182 and other relevant methods units may progress to further research study.
At the completion of this unit students will:
020307 Decision Support Systems
This unit adds to previous study in the key business intelligence/decision support systems graduate units and provides an avenue for high-performing students to experience research as an intern working with DSS researchers on a major project. Each intern will have a negotiated work and assessment schedule. Admission to the internship requires excellence in the prerequisite units and a satisfactory interview with the relevant project researchers.
There is no prescribed reading list for FIT5182.
On-campus
Each intern will be supervised by an academic staff member who is qualified and experienced in DSS research. Interns will be required to attend relevant seminars, workshops, and meetings.
In-semester assessment: 100%.
Each intern will be provided with an assessment regime that details what is required for their specific internship. This will include a marking guide that details what is required for each grade level. Each intern's assessment regime must be approved by the ADE before enrolment can be granted.
12
Interns are expected to spend 24 hours per week on FIT5182. They are required to attend seminars, workshops, and meetings related to DSS research during their internship.
There are no teaching rooms required for FIT5182.
FIT
None.
Enrolment is subject to ADE approval (see assessment)
FIT5094 IT for management decision making and FIT5093 Business intelligence applications and FIT5095 Data warehousing. Students must normally achieve a high distinction grade in each of these units. Selection for students who meet this requirement is based on a final interview.
FIT5098
This unit will expose high-performing coursework students to major DSS research projects by joining existing research projects for one semester. They will be exposed to mainstream information systems research methods and will take part in the "life" of a research lab. After completing FIT5182 students may be inspired to undertake a higher degree by research.
