Project management is a popular area and relevant to almost all FIT students. The arguments are all well known and self evident. Project management is important in industry because the way projects are scheduled and managed determines cash flow and delivery lead time of major contracts. Training in project management is highly regarded by employers. Many informal surveys of new and existing students have confirmed the appeal and likely success of a Project Management track.
On 29 Jan 2010, the FIT Graduate Programs Committee (GPC) agreed to a proposal for a Project Management professional track in the Master of Business Information Systems MBIS. http://infotech.monash.edu/about/committees-groups/fec/sc-pgcrsework/2010/meetings/110ag.html Item 4.2.1
"FIT5180 Business and legal issues in project management" is one of the core units of the track. It will also be an elective for other postgraduate courses within Monash University.
"FIT5180 Business and legal issues in project management" will cover the strategic, financial, legal and entrepreneurial factors of project management. Specifically, accounting and finance, business law, entrepreneurship. This knowledge is needed where a student wishes to work as a project manager.
This change to assessment has been implemented to address issues raised by students with the implementation of in semester class tests. Therefore the exam component has been introduced and set to 40%. Students had also requested that tutorial contact hours were not long enough so this has been set to 2 hours. The change is required for semester 1, 2015.

080315 Project Management
This unit, together with FIT5057 Project Management, and FIT5178 Applied Project Management, gives a full coverage of the main areas of Project Management. These units will give students the knowledge and skills needed to work in project planning, project control, or as an entry level project manager in industry. The emphasis in FIT5180 is on the business and legal aspects of planning and executing projects. Project management is a common pathway to higher management in industry. These topics are especially important to students who intend to work as project managers and take part in the sales, contract administration, and strategic planning of an organization.
Examination (3 hours): 40%; In-semester assessment: 60%.
Hurdle requirements: In order to pass the unit students are required to achieve 40% for each assessment type and achieve an overall unit mark of 50% or more.
