FIT5168 Semi-structured data management - disestablished (28 Apr 2021, 3:41pm) [SEMI STRUCT DATA (28 Jun 2012, 02:03am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This subject covers important software engineering concerns such as the role of validation and verification (V& V) in the system life cycle. The development of high quality work activities and products during software development requires attention to V & V procedures. Independant V & V procedures, compiliance to quality standards such as ISO9000/AS39000 are becoming mandatory requirements with some Government contracts for international competitiveness and also in the Department of Defense and in aerospace industries. It also covers quality and reliability issues in safety-critical and mission-critical systems. This subject will enable students to gain an understanding of how to introduce such V & V methods, quality standards and supporting tools into organisations and improve the quality and reliability of software systems. 28/4/2021 - Unit disestablished at FEC 2/21 Item 6.2

Reasons for Introduction (21 Nov 2008, 11:35am)

Created as part of the Master of information Technology and Master of Applied Information Technology Units - 2009

Reasons for Change (24 Sep 2019, 12:19pm)

24/9/2019: Admin - adding 10 minutes to the exam duration as per University requirements.

19/06/2015 - Admin: learning outcomes were revised on 23/3/15 but never submitted.

On 23 March 2015, "Unit Objectives" were updated to become "Learning Outcomes", i.e. abilities that the students should acquire by completion of the course.

On 16 February 2011, editorial changes were made to the "Learning Objectives" field. The change should take effect in Semester 1, 2011. Under ``Learning Objectives'', ``implemented as relational model'' was changed to ``implemented by the relational model''; "data repository" was changed to "data repositories".

On 28th of June 2012, change the name of the course (by removing "object" from the title) to better reflect the content of the course, which doesn't include Object Databases. Change should take effect by Semester 1 2013.

27/2/2013 - Duration of exam (2 hours) specified by CE since this information is required for the Unit Guide for Semester 1,2013 implementation.

17/1/2014 - Modified the Assessment/Summary, changing the examination/in-semester-assessment breakdown from 50%/50% to 60%/40% in order to better reflect the time commitment of the students and to improve the accuracy/quality of student outcomes. For Semester 1 2014 implementation.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:20pm)

This is one of four core units in the Data Management specialisation of the Master of Information Technology (MIT) and Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT). It is also available as an elective for all FIT masters.

Objectives

Objectives (19 Jun 2015, 12:39pm)

On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. explain differences between structured and semi-structured data;
  2. evaluate data management requirements and identify situations that can not be appropriately modelled with the relational data model;
  3. create data repositories for XML documents by applying the concepts of schemas and namespaces in a case study;
  4. apply transformation languages for transforming and repurposing XML data;
  5. apply query languages for navigating and querying an XML data store;
  6. use current Database Management Systems (DBMS) to store, retrieve and update non-relational data;
  7. compare and describe strengths and weaknesses of object-relational and native XML DBMS for handling XML.

Synopsis (21 Jun 2012, 12:25pm)

This unit investigates the management of semi-structured data. The unit explores the modelling of semi-structured data in XML using XML Schema and the transformation of such data using XSLT. It looks at methods for storing, querying and updating semi-structured data in both native-XML and object-relational database management systems and the design issues involved.
