Re-introduced as a Tier-2 unit (advanced unit) for Master of Information Technology - 2014

This unit serves as a Tier-2 (advanced) unit in the new Master of Information Technology course - 2014.

18/7/13 Amending prerequisites and date of introduction. Effective Semester 1 2014.

22/10/2014 - Amended prerequisite requirements by adding 2015, FIT9xxx version of 2014, FIT5xxx foundation units. Approved at GPC 4/14 (Item 6.2).

24/03/2015 - Objectives updated to Learning Outcomes for AQF compliance. Effective Sem 2, 2015.

27/09/2016: Add the new MDS Python unit FIT9133 as a possible pre-requisite for this unit as per Wray Buntine's request. Students may implement the assignment of the unit in any programming language. Semester of implementation: Semester 1 2017

April 2017. On behalf of CE, adding Reasons for Change, and submitting on CE behalf. Updated exam duration from 3 to 2 hours as required by new University Examination procedures, effective S2 2017.

26/6/2018 - Updated exam period from 2 hours with 30 minutes reading/noting time back to 3 hours. This unit is to allow more comprehensive examination of students' command of knowledge at the analysing, synthesising and evaluating levels of the Bloom's Taxonomy. Effective Semester 2, 2018

29/06/2018: Admin - The assessment change to a 3 hour exam was not approved, therefore the assessment has been changed to a 2 hour exam with the standard 10 minutes reading and noting time.

5/10/2018: Update to prerequisites to allow Software engineering students to enrol as an approved elective. Effective 2019.

24/9/2019: Admin - adding 10 minutes to the exam duration as per University requirements.

28/07/2020: Admin - update assessment to new format as per CE's email to ADLT.

This is one of four core units in the Data Management specialisation of the Master of Information Technology (MIT) and Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT). It is also available as an elective for all FIT masters.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

• analyse critically the context and application of information retrieval systems;
• compare the different models of information retrieval and their comparative advantages and disadvantages;
• apply objective and subjective evaluation strategies in information retrieval systems;
• address the issues and challenges of managing very large collections of heterogeneous data for information retrieval;
• research how web search engines and search algorithms are constructed, utilised and deployed;
• do indexing for different media;
• implement information retrieval systems for the retrieval of audio-visual information;
• reflect on the theoretical and practical underpinnings of relevance feedback in information retrieval systems

This unit presents students with the theory and practice underlying computerised information retrieval. Topics covered include: history and context of information retrieval systems, retrieval models, Boolean, vector space and probabilistic, evaluation strategies, test collections, web search engines, indexing, content-based multimedia retrieval and relevance feedback.

• One (two-parts coding) large individual assignment (30%)
