The usual name of Services Science is: SSME Services Science Management and Engineering This subject proposal was initiated by the deans of FIT and Bus Eco, Ron Weber and Gill Palmer, and the subject content is currently under development. Only a preliminary description is entered here. The following information comes from various sources, including IBM and universities which have already introduced SSME. http://www.research.ibm.com/ssme/ The world economy is experiencing the largest labour force migration in history. Driven by an environment that includes global communications, business growth and technology innovation, services now accounts for more than 50 percent of the labour force in Brazil, Russia, Japan and Germany, as well as 75 percent of the labour force in the United States and the United Kingdom. This unparalleled segment growth is changing the way companies organize themselves, creating a ripple effect in industries and universities that are closely tied to these organisations. For instance, historically, most scientific research has been geared to supporting and assisting manufacturing, which was once a dominant force in the world economy. Now that economies are shifting, industrial and academic research facilities need to apply more scientific rigor to the practices of services, such as finding better ways to use mathematical optimisation to increase productivity and efficiency on demand. Services sciences, Management and Engineering hopes to bring together ongoing work in computer science, operations research, industrial engineering, business strategy, management sciences, social and cognitive sciences, and legal sciences to develop the skills required in a services-led economy.
This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.
07/12/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.
This is an elective unit Master of Business (IT Management), Business Systems professional track unit. It is also available as an elective unit in all FIT Masters. This unit has some content which relates to FIT5077 e-Business application and development; FIT5150 Project management, FIT5160 Business process modelling, design and simulation; and FIT9012 Database management systems.
Services sciences, Management and Engineering hope to bring together ongoing work in computer science, operations research, industrial engineering, business strategy, management sciences, social and cognitive sciences, and legal sciences to develop the skills required in a services-led economy. The theoretical foundations of SSME come from the disciplines of economics, computer science, engineering, law, and organisational sociology.
This is a new topic area for FIT which will initiate development of teaching and research in the area of Services Science. The arguments for its relevance to IT students have been well documented by IBM and in many journal articles.
At the completion of this unit students will:

Services science draws from the social sciences, business, and engineering technology and applies scientific methods to the design and management of services. The use of IT is a crucial and essential part of services science and an understanding this area is of major importance to IT students. In the current business environment IT techniques and skills have become essential to successfully manage operations, services and projects. The focus of this unit is to provide students with sufficient knowledge of modern services science and business operations, concepts, and modern software, to work effectively in service operations roles in industry and government.
2 hrs lectures/wk, 2 hr laboratory/wk
Reasons for change: The previous tutorials were one hour per week. In 2010-1 all tutors recommended two hour tutorials. They said it was not possible to properly teach the topics in one hour.
