04 Dec 2009 - This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

First introduced in Sem 2 2008 as a basic programming unit with FIT9017 as prohibition. Starting 2010, will be turned into an advanced programming unit with FIT9017 as pre-requisite.

30 Sep 2011 - FIT5170 and FIT5042 have been added as prohibitions. These units are more advanced than FIT5151. Through completing FIT5170 or FIT5042 students will have covered most of the topics covered in FIT5151. This needs to take effect from Semester 1 2012.

03 Feb 2012 - The prohibitions stated below are removed. Since FIT5170 and FIT5042 are more advanced than FIT5151, students should be able to enrol them after completing FIT5151. After completing FIT5170 or FIT5042, it is up to the discretion of the student and the course directors to enrol in FIT5151.

21 May 2013: Pre-requisites updated to cater for transition to the new version of the MBIS degree in 2014.

This is one of the four units in the Business Application Development professional track of the Masters of Business Information Systems (MBIS). It is the advanced programming unit in the professional track and can be taken as an elective unit in Master of Information Technology (MIT) only with course director approval. This unit has FIT9017 Foundations of Programming as pre-requisite. FIT5151 will aim at capitalising on what students have learned in FIT9017 and covering more material to enable students to build business applications that follow good Software Engineering principles of maintainability, reusability and expandability.

On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:

• Design and implement well-run, well-tested and well-documented object-oriented software by following the solid software engineering principles of maintainability, reusability and expandability
• Explain and apply a variety of popular object-oriented design patterns within the greater context of an application as a whole.
• Identify and analyse business-related problems and develop object-oriented solutions to these problems.
• Evaluate the successfulness of an object-oriented solution through the use of thorough software testing strategies.
• Demonstrate the communication skills needed to explain the overall design and technical aspects of a completed object-oriented solution in both a face-to-face manner and through well documented source code.

FIT5151 will aim at capitalising on what students have learned in FIT9017 Foundations of Programming (or equivalent) and covering more in-depth material to enable students to build business applications that follow good Software Engineering principles of maintainability, reusability and expandability. The emphasis will be on helping students acquire solid object-oriented programming knowledge and skills for building business applications. Popular object-oriented design patterns will be introduced whenever appropriate to illustrate effective design process in building larger systems.
