FIT5146 Data Curation and Management is core to the GDIKM (which has no electives), and one of a number of units that MBIS students can choose from for the core component of that degree. It is to be taught from Semester 2 2015. It is a required unit for those seeking professional recognition with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), the Records and Information Management (RIM) Professional Association of Australia or the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA). It is also a core unit in both Master of Data Science (on campus) and Graduate Diploma in Data Science (Monash Online) to commence in 2016.

27/2/2015: Amended workload requirements following discussion with Chair of GPC to clarify the workload for the various teaching modes.

18/4/2016: Amended assessment to reflect the fact that the on campus version of the unit should have an exam.

03/05/2016: Updated assessment as per comments at GPC 2/16 - clarifying Monash Online 100% in-semester assessment.

04/10/2016: Monatar listed 2 hours laboratories, but in fact it is 2 hours tutorial - change to bring into line with teaching methods.

31/3/2017: Revising assessment to 100% in-semester as this provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning with practical applications with an added authentication method. Effective S2 2017.

12/06/2017: GPC 2/17 (Item 7.1) did not approve the change to assessment for FIT5146 Data curation and management. Further justification was requested and received.

The ADE was asked to review this amendment and following consultation decided that the existing assessment of exam 40%/assignments 60% for the on-campus offering was appropriate, therefore the amendment to 100% in-semester assessment was rejected. The examination was set at 2 hours as per university policy.

22/09/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

23/7/2021: The assessment schedule has been tweaked to better reflect the blended teaching approach and provide more formative assessment through the unit test. The other assessments have been adjusted to reflect the lower marks (assignment 1A and assignment 3). This change was prompted by the teaching team's experience of offering a unit test in semester 1 (in another unit)

FIT5146 Data Curation and Management is a core unit in the Master of Data Science course. Its key objectives are to prepare students so that they will:

• Understand the key issues surrounding data management and stewardship
• Understand the ethical, legal, social and organisational issues that impact the creation and use of digital repositories
• Understand the various architectures and processes that are used in the delivery of data services
• Understand the range of specialist professional roles and responsibilities associated with digital repositories

This unit provides students with an understanding of the tasks and the main issues associated with the management of data in modern organisations and communities for business and societal purposes. The unit will examine some of the key issues that affect the data management function, incorporating recordkeeping, information accessibility, knowledge management and the governance and accountability for the data repositories. This will be used as a basis for explaining the nature of specialist work in this field and associated professional roles and responsibilities. Topics cover digital repository infrastructures, digital continuity planning; data archiving; data migration; the development of systems to support data discovery and reuse; mediated access to digital information; negotiation of data rights (ownership, copyright, access, privacy etc); utilisation of cloud computing platforms, and the data curation continuum.
