27/5/2014 Formatted learning outcomes

17/2/2015 - added offering at Malaysia; change to mode of offering, it needs to be flexible mode; update to synopsis and workload requirements to allow this unit to be completed over 12 months due to the nature of offering.

11/7/2019: Admin update - Prof. Sue McKemmish to replace Dr Henry Linger as Chief Examiner for semester 2, 2019 and semester 1, 2020.

11/11/2019: Rewording the prerequisite rule to clearly stipulate enrolment eligibility for PhD and MPhil students. Effective 2020.

22/09/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

10/6/2021 - Changed the workload to explicitly specify the mandatory requirements of the unit as well as to specifically stating the teaching activity as workshop. This is to ensure that this is reflected in the handbook and consequently in timetabling. A couple of other sections to change the word "elective" to "mandatory" to reflect the status of the unit in FIT PhD training.

FIT5144 Research Strategies and Skills in a mandatory unit designed to be delivered as part of the FIT PhD coursework offerings. It will also be offered to Masters of Philosophy students. The PhD coursework program focuses on preparing students to conduct research across the range of the disciplines that cover Information and Communication Technology (ICT) research (FIT6021 Advance Research Methods 1), as well as developing generic, professional and technical skills that will help students in their research studies and to fulfil their career ambitions (FIT5144 Research Strategies and Skills).

On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Develop and implement a publication strategy
  • Manage research data and IP
  • Develop and implement research funding strategies
  • Apply entrepreneurial and innovative approaches to commercializing research
  • Communicate and publish research findings in different forms to a range of different audiences in academic, industry and community forums
  • Plan and organise PhD and Masters research, using the milestones to ensure timely completion
  • Apply a range of generic and professional research skills to enhance future employability and plan a career in research

    FIT5144 Research Strategies and Skills is a mandatory unit designed for PhD and Master of Philosophy students. It focuses on the development of strategies and skills to complement and support PhD and Masters research studies, and prepare students for a career in research. PhD students are expected to complete FIT5144 before their Mid-Candidature/Progress Review.

    The unit is based on mandatory and elective activities which in total need to be 120 hours. This is a non standard unit with the mandatory workshop activities scheduled throughout the year.

    The mandatory activities are two workshop series; Communicating Your Research (CYR) and Ethics in Research and Publications (Ethics). The CYR series is 30 hours of workshop activities while Ethics is 6 hours of mandatory workshop activities and a further optional 6 hours of workshop activities.

    The elective activities require students to be involved in FIT and MGRO activities of their choice as well as other activities that are approved by the Chief Examiner
