Objectives

Objectives (05 May 2016, 2:15pm)

Upon successful completion if this unit, students will be able to:

Review and critique a range of information technologies as they are applied in real scientific and commercial environments. These include modelling, optimisation, visualisation, data analytics and simulations of complex systems

Articulate and explain how the management of data and storage can be made conducive to later data exploration and analysis

Analyse data sets and visualize the results of these analyses

Present the results of statistical data analysis to convey concrete information to non-technical users

Use a range of data analytics, visualization and simulation tools including R

Apply theoretical understanding of novel IT techniques to real world community, business and scientific problems

Synopsis (16 Feb 2015, 10:40am)

Computers and information technology pervade all aspects of modern society and industry. This unit is designed to familiarise students with several key ways in which IT technologies are increasingly being used. Currently tools based on data analytics, modelling, optimisation and visualisation are growing in relevance and application. This unit consists of a number of seminars, the content of which will cover key applications models and domains of the above techniques. The assessment component of this course is coursework only and in a series of assignments students will be required to undertake analytical research on recent developments in key application areas. Furthermore they will have the opportunities to develop skills in data management, data analytics and visualisation using state of the art tools such as R and Tableau.

Assessment

Assessment Summary (26 Aug 2015, 1:47pm)

In-semester assessment: 100%

The unit is designed to allow students to consolidate their understanding of principles they have learnt during the rest of their Masters program, primarily in the areas of data science, visualisation and creative problem solving. It is taught as a series of seminars, delivered mostly by guest lecturers. An end of semester examination is not an appropriate form of assessment. Students are assessed through an essay demonstrating command of the research aspects, and practical assignments that require them to use up-to-date data management, analysis and visualisation tools. Students are interviewed for the two practical assignments help ensure integrity of assessment.
