Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

FIT5140 IoT and Mobile Applications (31 May 2021, 1:29pm) [ADV MOB SYST (05 Jun 2013, 9:07pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (05 Jun 2013, 9:07pm)

Created as a Tier-2 unit (advanced unit) for Master of Information Technology - 2014

Reasons for Change (01 Jun 2021, 2:55pm)

25/8/13 - Objectives have been amended by CE to comply with AQF requirements, for 2015 offering.

19/6/15 - The contents need to be redeveloped to align with progress in mobile technology. It is also anticipated that FIT4039 will not be offered in the future once the MIT/MAIT (prior to 2014) students complete their degree. It is important for the MIT degree to cover mobile system programming.

19/09/2018 - In the Workload/Contact hours, the 2 hour tutorial was changed to 2 hour laboratory because this unit involves programming in labs.

5/10/2018: Update to prerequisites to allow Software engineering students to enrol as an approved elective. Effective 2019.

09/10/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

31/05/2021 - CE Pari Delir Haghighi: Changed the unit name. The current name, 'Advanced mobile systems', is vague and does not represent what this unit really offers. The unit involves creating mobile and IoT applications using real sensors (very practical, 100% in-semester assessment). This change helps students to better understand the focus of the unit and make an informed decision. It also increases the visibility of the unit.

31/05/2021 - CE Pari Delir Haghighi: one word 'IoT' was added to learning outcome 4 to reflect the unit name change.

1/06/2021 - CE Pari Delir Haghighi: some of the mapping of the assessment items to the unit learning outcomes was missing and was provided.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (05 Jun 2013, 9:07pm)

This is one of the advanced units (Tier-2) in the Master of Information Technology - 2014, and is also available as an elective for all FIT masters.

Objectives

Objectives (31 May 2021, 1:32pm)

On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. describe the principles and theoretical concepts of mobile software systems
  2. explain different mobile systems toolkits and development environments
  3. utilise techniques for developing mobile applications
  4. develop IoT and mobile applications
  5. integrate mobile applications with other systems, such as sensor network systems or web systems.

Synopsis (22 Jun 2015, 3:13pm)

This unit focuses theoretical concepts, applications and research issues of mobile software. Students will learn techniques to design and develop mobile applications. A number of different toolkits/development environments will be discussed and used for the practical component of the unit. Interaction between mobile applications and other systems such as sensor networks or web systems will also be explored.

Prescribed Reading (for new units) (09 Oct 2020, 1:53pm)

Technological requirements

Students will require access to:

Both will be available in the Labs and are freely available online.

Students will also be making use of the iOS University Developers Program. This requires a free Apple ID. Students can sign up at https://appleid.apple.com/ You are permitted to use your own laptop in the lab in addition to using any iOS device if you wish to test your software rather than run it in an emulated environment.
