FIT5139 Advanced distributed and parallel systems - Disestablished (19 Nov 2020, 1:03pm) [ADV PAR DIST SYST (05 Jun 2013, 8:54pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (05 Jun 2013, 8:55pm)

Created as a Tier-2 unit (advanced unit) for Master of Information Technology - 2014

Reasons for Change (19 Nov 2020, 1:03pm)

12/8/13 - Objectives have been amended by CE to comply with AQF requirements, for 2015 offering.

27/01/15 - Workload/SpecialRequirements 2-hour tutorial changed to 2-hour laboratory. A note added under special requirement: Linux and Windows (dual-boot) PC required. The change ensures allocation of labs with correct type of computers being timetabled. These edits need to be visible in Monatar before 31 Dec 2015.

04/08/2016 - CE modified prerequisites as follows: FIT5139 currently has FIT5046 listed as the sole pre-req. The unit requires the same pre-reqs as for FIT5046, but it does not rely on FIT5046 for pre-req knowledge. This change corrects the above anomaly by retaining FIT5046's pre-reqs but removing FIT5046 itself from the unit's pre-reqs list.

28/06/2017 - Admin: Adding Reasons for Change. Updating exam hours from 3 to 1.5 hours as required by new University Examination procedures, effective S1 2018.

21/08/2017 - Admin: Updating assessment on behalf of the CE as requested by Chair of GPC - changes from 1.5 hour exam to 2 hour exam.

5/10/2018: Update to prerequisites to allow Software engineering students to enrol as an approved elective. Effective 2019.

24/9/2019: Admin - adding 10 minutes to exam duration as per University requirements.

19/11/2020: Admin - this unit was disestablished at FEC 5/20 on 12/11/2020 as it is no longer required.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (05 Jun 2013, 8:55pm)

This is one of the advanced units (Tier-2) in the Master of Information Technology - 2014, and is also available as an elective for all FIT masters.

Objectives

Objectives (12 Aug 2013, 12:09pm)

On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • solve basic problems in distributed computing, especially in relation to synchronisation, distributed transactions, concurrency control, distributed consensus
  • explain the differences between various distributed computing models and widely used distributed computing schemes
  • describe a variety of parallel programming paradigms, synchronisation and parallelisation primitives, message passing, data parallel, tuple space
  • identify computational tasks that benefit from parallelism
  • design and implement a parallel-distributed software system
  • Unit Content

    Synopsis (05 Jun 2013, 9:05pm)

Modern computer systems contain parallelism in both hardware and software. This unit covers parallelism in both general purpose and application specific computer architectures and the programming paradigms that allow parallelism to be exploited in software. This unit examines both shared memory and message passing paradigms in both hardware and software; concurrency, multithreading and synchronicity; parallel, clustered and distributed supercomputing models and languages. Students will program in these paradigms. This unit draws on units in distributed databases and grid computing. It will also cover the technology and application of cloud computing with particular reference to programming frameworks (e.g. MapReduce, Hadoop etc).
