9/09/13 - On behalf of CE, modified wording of objectives based on advice from Director Education Quality. Amended objectives to comply with AQF requirements.

GPC 3/2014 endorsed changing FIT5135 foundation unit to FIT9135 foundation unit to differentiate the foundation units from the non-foundation units. This change will be reflected in the 3348 - Master of Information Technology; 3342 - Master of Business Information Systems and 4313 - Master of Information Technology Professional/Master of Business Information Systems Professional. FIT5135 will be disestablished at the end of 2014 and FIT9135 will be offered from Semester 1,2015.

09/03/2015 - This unit was a foundation unit in the Masters programs and has been replaced by FIT9135.

FIT5135 is one of the foundation units for the Master of Information Technology postgraduate students. It prepares students so that they will understand the theoretical and practical aspects of providing computer solutions to real world problems.

The unit will introduce students to fundamentals of data and computer communications method and techniques. It covers: ISO and TCP/IP layered protocols; physical layer concepts: data transmission methods, signal encoding and digital data communication techniques; data link control protocol, multiplexing methods; WAN and LAN networking fundamentals; internetworking and transport protocols.
