The academic staff of the Monash DSS Lab have conducted a review of the MIMS specialisation in decision support systems and identified a number of recommendations. The review included market analysis consisting of consultation with both industry and graduate students.At this point in time, the support systems that are currently used in industry include personal decision support, executive information systems, enterprise wide reporting systems, online analytical processing systems (OLAP), data warehouses, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems. In the current BI Masters specialisation:IMS5005 covers personal decision support with a focus on managementIMS5004 covers OLAP, EIS and reportingIMS5026 covers datawarehousingIMS5027 covers knowledge managementThe review showed that there is a noticeable lack of coverage of CRM. This is particularly concerning given that CRM is one of the fastest growing areas of business intelligence, often one of the key drivers in motivating an organisation to adopt a business intelligence framework.A new 6 credit-point unit is required to provide adequate coverage of analytical CRM. The subject will focus on CRM data issues and analytics. In designing the syllabus of this new unit we have stressed the data warehouse, data mining, and reporting aspects of CRM. This new unit should be attractive to MIMS, MBS, MIT, and other students with an appropriate IT background who are studying business masters degrees.
