2/6/17 - Changed exam time to comply with the maximum 2-hour exam rule. Due to this change, I would like to extend the reading time to 30 minutes reading and noting time so that students would have sufficient time to read and complete their exams.

This is a general unit of the Business Intelligence professional track. It is available as an elective in all FIT masters and the Master of Business (IT Management).

At the completion of this unit students will:

• examine and describe the concepts, scope and application of IT for decision support;
• explain the nature of managerial decision-making;
• create IT-based decision support for managers;
• evaluate major approaches of IT-based decision support;
• select the appropriate decision support approach for a particular project;
• perform system analysis for management support projects.

This unit provides students with an understanding of the development and use of information systems that support managers, especially their decision-making tasks. Students will learn of the nature of management work and decision theory and how this affects the development of decision support systems. A number of commonly used decision support methods and techniques will be explored. Students will be introduced to personal decision support systems, group support systems, negotiation support systems, data warehousing, executive information systems and business intelligence.

All tutorials need to be scheduled in 24/7 studios (B3.42B, B3.46, B3.46B and B3.48). BUT, tutorials can be in no more than 3 rooms due to licensing restrictions. Reason: The unit needs to use a licensed software, iThink, which is only installed in the studios that the tutorials are scheduled. Students need to access to the software to complete their assignment. High demand of software usage was observed in the past, and 24/7 studios can accommodate more student demand.

Callista prerequisites:

No prerequisites for MBIS (Professional) (3341.2), MBIS (Honours) (3343)

Callista & Handbook prerequisites:

Master of Project Management (C6006): No prerequisites.

All other courses: Must have passed FIT9130 or ((MGX5962 or MGF5962) and three of (ACF5903, BTF5903, ECF5953, ETF5900, MGF5020, MGF5030, MGX5991, MGX5992, MKX5955, MGF5991, MGF5992 or MKF5955).
