Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

The unit is in line with the School's objectives and is consistent with the demands of the information industry for graduates able to demonstrate understanding of information communities (also called virtual communities)and how these operate as markets for information content including multimedia content. The unit fulfils a need for exploration of theory and practical examples to critical success factors in the development of information products and services. The insights gained are translated into practical competencies required for information enterprise i.e. recognising information needs and opportunities, and organising responses to these which are appropriate, creative, and financially viable.

Reasons for Introduction (29 Oct 2009, 6:19pm)

This unit is offered within the Master of Information Management and Systems and the Master of Business Systems, and is required for those students seeking professional recognition by ALIA and RMAA and ASA.

Reasons for Change (19 Nov 2020, 1:01pm)

14 February 2013: Unit objectives have been modified to further differentiate the cognitive level of the unit from that of its former child, FIT3098. Changes to take effect in Semester 1,2013.

April 2017. On behalf of CE, adding Reasons for Change, and submitting on CE behalf. Updated exam duration from 3 to 2 hours as required by new University Examination procedures, effective S2 2017.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

4/5/2020: As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA5090 effective Semester 2, 2020. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:19pm)

This is a core unit in the Library, Archival and Recordkeeping Systems Professional track in the Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) from 2009.It is co-taught with FIT3098 Social Informatics. This unit provides students with the skills and knowledge to participate effectively in the development of information products and services, whether as employees, team members, contractors, or self-employed practitioners.

With its emphasis upon the development of information products and services, this unit complements other units required by students seeking professional recognition by ALIA, RMAA and ASA.

Objectives

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • analyse the nature and operation of information communities within contemporary society;
  • evaluate community informatics as an emerging discipline and professional practice;
  • assess contemporary debates concerning the social impact of information technology use;
  • distinguish the collaborative behaviours and interdependencies which contribute to notions of community;
  • analyse and critique cases from the information industry.

    This unit provides students with a critical understanding of the impact of information technology (IT) within contemporary social relations. Using case studies drawn from different social spheres, the unit explores the ways in which the diffusion of IT has reshaped thinking and practice concerning social collaboration, the production of knowledge and community building. Particular attention is paid to the emerging field of community informatics, and the implications that this field holds for the work of information and knowledge management professionals

    Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

  • 2 hours of lectures
  • One 2-hour tutorial
  • (b.) Study schedule for off-campus students:

  • Off-campus students generally do not attend lecture and tutorial sessions, however should plan to spend equivalent time working through the relevant resources and participating in discussion groups each week.
  • (c.) Additional requirements (all students):

  • A minimum of 2-3 hours of personal study per one hour of contact time in order to satisfy the reading and assignment expectations.
