This is a core unit the Masters of Business Information Systems, the Graduate Diploma in Information Management and Systems, Graduate Diploma in Information and Knowledge Management, and the Graduate Certificate of Information Management and Systems, which is accredited by the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) and Records Management Association of Australia (RMAA). It is also a core unit in the Corporate Information and Knowledge Management CIKM professional track. The unit aims to prepare students for professional practice in business information, knowledge and content management and appreciate the role of the modern ICT in achieving efficient strategies for managing personal and organisational knowledge.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

12 Jan 2012 The length of the tutorial has changed from 1 hour to 1.5 hours based on the feedback received from students and tutors. Effective Semester 1, 2012.

22/11/2013 - On behalf of CE amended co-requisites from 'FIT5130 or FIT9003 or equivalent' to 'FIT5132 or FIT9003 or equivalent'. FIT5130 was originally added in error as FIT5132 is the replacement unit for FIT9003 in the new degree structures. Effective Semester 1, 2014.

21/10/2014 - Amended corequisite requirements by adding 2015, FIT9xxx version of 2014, FIT5xxx foundation units. Approved at GPC 4/14 (Item 6.2).

12/10/2015 - Amended tutorial room requirement from B3.52 to FIT studio room. Effective from Semester 1, 2016.

07/09/2016: The length of the tutorial is not adequate to cover the material needed. Students feedback was consistent with this. Tutorial time was extended to 2 hours accordingly.

23/11/2016: The pre-requisite knowledge of analysis and design techniques suits better the needs of this unit than the current data-base unit.

25/11/2016: Removed FIT9130 as pre-requisite. CE has advised that FIT9130 should be a co-requisite only. Effective Sem 1/2017.

This is one of the units needed for professional recognition purposes with ALIA, RMAA and ASA, and is part of the Graduate Diploma Information and Knowledge Management (IKM), as well as the Corporate Information and Knowledge Management Professional track of the Master of Information Management Systems (MIMS). This unit was developed to substitute for some previous content within the information and knowledge management graduate programs.

It is available as an elective in the Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) and Master of Business (IT Management) from 2009. In addition, it was offered as an elective within the MIMS and MBusSys programs for 2008. This unit is co-taught with FIT3122 Information and knowledge management systems. It replaces IMS5033 and IMS5330.

This unit address the aim of the Faculty to produce skilled information and knowledge management (IKM) professionals, including information and knowledge managers, information architects, information policy developers, information project managers and information consultants for business and government organisations. This unit is within the Faculty's research strength related to COSI.

This unit provides students with the skills and knowledge relating to the use of latest technologies for managing knowledge, electronic documents and records to meet the needs of individuals, work groups and organisations. The unit aims to build a general understanding of technologies for managing personal and organisational structured and unstructured information and knowledge and the methods of developing systems to handle it. Students study the business context, requirements analysis techniques and implementation issues for electronic document management, recordkeeping, content and other information and knowledge management systems.
