Changes are as planned and approved from 2014 onwards in relation to the Master of Networks and Security degree. Room has had to be given to topics in wired transmission infrastructure and on infrastructure management.

18/7/13 - Amendments to prerequisites and prohibitions, effective Semester 1 2014.

23/7/13 - Amended unit title to sentence case to align with University style guide.

13/08/2013 - made changes to the unit objectives as suggested by the education quality director.

11/9/13 - In consultation with CE and APS Managers, deleted obselete text from Role, Relationship of Unit field and updated content to show relevance to new MNS degree being offered effective 2014.

21/10/2014 - Amended prerequisite requirements by adding 2015, FIT9xxx version of 2014, FIT5xxx foundation units. Approved at GPC 4/14 (Item 6.2).

5/1/2015 - Amendments to prerequisite requirements effective Semester 1 2015.

2/8/2016 - Amendments to handbook entry needs updating, the change is inclusion of InternetofThings(IoT) and sensor networks topics.

17/08/2016 - Admin: numbered learning outcomes and submitting changes made by CE.

3 April 2017: Adding reasons for Change on behalf of Chief Examiner. Examination hours updated to meet new University Examination Procedures. Effective S2 2017.

28 April 2017: Admin - amended assessment so the 30 minute reading and noting time was against the examination hours and not at the end at the request of GPC.

12/06/2017: Admin - updating location of offering to reflect actual campus offerings at the ADE's request.

22/06/2018: Admin - adding reasons for change - Update to assessment removing the 30 minute reading and noting time from the exam.

5/10/2018: Update to prerequisites to allow Software engineering students to enrol as an approved elective. Effective 2019.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

4/5/2020: As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA5083 effective Semester 2, 2020. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made

This is one of four core units in the Network Computing Specialisation in the Master of Information Technology (MIT) and Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT). It is also available as an elective in all FIT Masters. This has relevance only to 2013 and prior intake and is not relevant to 2014 intake.

FIT5083 is a core unit in the new Master of Networks and Security degree being offered effective 2014.

On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. describe basic communications and network infrastructures;
2. analyse and evaluate communications and network infrastructures for enterprises;
3. use latest wired and wireless network technologies in building network infrastructures.

Tansmission media impose various and often unique constraints on the design of networks and their achievable performance. This unit will cover key performance concepts in copper cables, optical fibre cabled and wireless transmission media. This includes atmospheric propagation impact on QoS, satellite and wireless systems, Wifi, WiMax network propagation issues and planning concepts, and satellite and terrestrial service planning concepts. The infrastructure requirements, reliability and maintainability of networks with specific transmission media will be covered, including the application of GIS, Internet of Things(IoT) and wireless sensor networks in design and planning for terrestrial, mobile and cellular systems.

Technological requirements

Matlab software will be used in a number of laboratories, and students should consider installing Matlab on a personal system.
