The intensive use of the Internet for commercial applications is evident, as hundreds of new commercial web sites are created everyday. The internet has increasingly taken roles as the enabling technology and the driver for many businesses: both in B2B and in B2C applications. This unit will introduce students to the hardware and software systems for conducting online businesses. The unit coverage prepare graduates with E-Business technology, appropriate E-Business strategy and modelling, as well as basic implementation skills for E-Business practice. The offering of this unit also addresses the community and professional demand by equipping Monash graduates with required skills and knowledge in E-Business. All these are in accordance with the themes of Innovation, Engagement and Internationalisation enunciated in the Monash Plan. (Note: A similar unit has been successfully introduced since 2001 at postgraduate level: BUS5960).

This is a core unit in the Business Application Development Professional track in the Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS). It is an elective unit in the Master of Business (IT Management) and other Master degrees. In 2008, this was a core unit in the Master of Business Systems (MBS) and the Master of Information Management Systems (MIMS).

The unit introduces students to development, planning and management of e-Business systems. It requires students to have Object-oriented programming background (for example through completion of FIT9004 or equivalent) so that they can extend their programming skill using the current technology platform.

This unit enables students to have greater appreciation on the use of current net technologies for commercial applications, including retailing activities by conventional and virtual businesses. The unit enriches the faculty's offering in Business Application Development professional track, in particular for e-Business systems development.

At the completion of this unit, students will:

• understand the concept of revenue modelling in eBusiness context;
• understand OOP as principles of component based software systems;
• appreciate technology architecture that underpin the deployment of e-business systems, including data formats and various programming solutions;
• appreciate the use of the internet for commercial purposes;
• realise the challenges in the planning stage of an e-business venture;

• be able to experiment with various technologies in the design and implementation of e-business applications;
• understand the various roles of e-business professionals (analysts, designers, systems developers, programmers) and how they work together in the current e-business context.

This unit extends students knowledge and skills to make use of current technologies in developing business applications on the internet platform. The unit provides an opportunity for students to explore net centric computing focusing on business applications development. The unit has been designed to equip future web application developers and managers of business solutions. Thus practical exercises will be illustrative with industrial strength and technology issues will be given equal coverage with technology details. The primary aim of the unit is to familiarise students with the currently popular web technologies so that their design and implementation decisions in the future will be informed and therefore produce successful systems with a high degree of probability. Topics coverage include data and messages using XML, architecture, scripting and programming in .NET platform
