This unit teaches students about how operating businesses work. It aims to give them sufficient understanding of operations to be able to take part in the execution and planning of operations. For computing students its purpose is to assist in the overall design of information and management systems within an operating business. The offering of this unit also addresses the community and professional demand by equipping Monash graduates with required skills and knowledge in business operations. All these are in accordance with the themes of Innovation, Engagement and Internationalisation enunciated in the Monash Plan.
This unit gives students an understanding of the operations of a business which builds and delivers products. Operations management is the largest single consulting area in the world and many of our students will work in, or in areas related to, operations, projects and manufacturing. This unit gives students the knowledge they need to work in these areas and take part in the business activities.
Operations management, service areas, and manufacturing are all heavy users of management software and all are heavily involved with information technology. Many of our students will work in those areas, or be involved in writing software which will be sold into those areas. This unit gives students the knowledge they need to do this.

This unit gives students an understanding of Operations Management in manufacturing and service organisations. Topics include financial calculations, an introduction to computer software systems in a management context, production planning and control, materials requirements planning and inventory control, project management with cash flow and costing, just-in-time systems, barcoding, quality assurance and the ISO 9000 standards, different types of organisation and their business strategies.
Lecture notes and examples will be provided. Other references will be advised in class.
Computer laboratory: 1 Hour per week/tutorial.
Each computer runs MS Windows and has site license for VISUAL Enterprise or similar operations management software.
