21 May, 2013 - Revised pre-requisites to cater for transition arrangements in relation to the introduction of the new version of the MBIS in 2014.

March 2010 - As a result of the introduction of FIT9017 Foundations in Programming as a MBIS foundation unit the unit prerequisites have been amended to permit either FIT9004 or FIT9017. This amendment can take effect immediately as there is no impact on currently enrolled students.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

8/2/2012 Removed MAIT-specific prerequisite units as they are not required. Change to take effect from Semester 1, 2012.

14/2/2012 Re-added FIT9019 as a prerequisite unit. This unit was incorrectly removed under the 8/2/12 prerequisite amendment. Change to take effect from Semester 1, 2012.

This is one of four core units in the Data Management Specialisation of the Master of Information Technology (MIT) and Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT). It is also available as an elective unit for all FIT Masters. This unit is a new code for BUS5410. It unit addresses information systems development, which is one of the core elements in Master of Business Systems (MBS), as well as in the Business Solutions Track in the Master of Computer Science.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

• create a database system for practical application utilising forms, reports and graphics;
• understand the principal aspects of setting up a complete database application system;
• write complex queries using database query language;
• experience group work in building a complex database application system;
• produce a database system of professional quality.

This unit is designed for students who wish to extend their programming abilities in developing relatively large database applications. An integrated system of significant size will be developed using the current industry standard software. Topics covered include the principal aspects of database development and applications, advanced queries, customising forms and professional reporting, business graphics, importing and exporting data, internet applications, debugging and error-handling security and system documentation
