15/7/13 - Added reasons for change on behalf of CE. The WP of MNS degree recommended substantial changes to FIT5037 (as a core unit of the degree) to provide network security fundamentals.

18/7/13 - Amendements to assessments, contact hours, prerequisites and prohibitions. Effective Semester 1 2014.

25/7/13 - Added reasons for change to assessment, on behalf of CE. Students need to apply theory to practice to be able to understand network security and the best way to assess students is through assignment and lab work.

5/1/2015 - Amendments to prerequisite requirements effective Semester 1 2015.

20/7/2015 - Amendment to the prerequisite by the CE (reason for change: the unit does not require the completion of FIT5163 since basic cryptography for network security is taught in the unit). Change to take effect from Semester 1, 2016.

21/1/2017 - Cleaned up pre-requisite format. Removed old foundation units, FIT5131 and FIT9017.

5/10/2018: Update to prerequisites to allow Software engineering students to enrol as an approved elective. Effective 2019.

23/7/2015 - Added FIT5037 as a co-requisite as approved at GPC 4/15.

17/9/2015 - Admin: Remove old learning outcomes and synopsis as it is confusing and number learning outcomes.

22/09/2015 - Updated prerequisite list to reflect the change made on 20/07/2015 (ie removing FIT5163 from the prerequisites).

23/7/2015 - Added FIT5163 as co-requisite as approved at GPC 4/15.

22/2/2016 - changed 100% in-semester assessment to 70% in-semester assessment and 30% examination advised by the ADE to comply with university policy and procedure.

16/1/2017- Amended prerequisites of FIT5037 to include FIT9133 as an optional programming unit, as MNS foundation units include the option of FIT9131 or FIT9133 as the programming foundation unit as per action from GPC 4/16 meeting.

11/04/2018 - Amended prerequisites of FIT5037, adding MNS foundation units FIT9134 and FIT9135. To be implemented for S1 2019.

9/7/2019: Unit to be co-taught with FIT3031, running at Clayton campus. Commencing semester 2, 2019 2020.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

23/10/2019: Added FIT5163 as prerequisite and removed FIT5163 as co-requisite. Effective 2020.

11/11/19: FEC 5/19 approved the removal of prerequisites FIT9134, FIT9135 and FIT9137, as they are prerequisite to FIT5163. Effective 2020.

24/09/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

This unit is optional in the Security Specialisation in the Master of Information Technology (MIT) and Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT). It is also available as an elective in all FIT Masters. It is an advanced unit for students who are interested in further study of security. It is based on Introduction to Network and Information Security (FIT5044 - previously CPE5002/CSE5210).

Advanced network security is important for students who want to become network security professionals.

This is a core unit of the Master of Network and Security degree. It is a prerequisite unit for FIT5129 and provides fundamental knowledge for other related security units.

This unit is co-taught with FIT3031 Network security.

On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. explain the fundamentals of wired and wireless network security;
2. use practical skills to identify computer system vulnerabilities and carry out penetration testing;
3. identify important network security components, then design and implement defence systems.

Network security is an important part of any computer network and essential knowledge for IT professionals. This unit provides fundamental network security for IT students and professionals. It covers wired and wireless communication and network security, security at different layers, computer system security, network services and applications security, basic defense systems, cryptography for network security, techniques for identifying system vulnerabilities and penetration testing.

There is no text book for this unit. Recommended list will be provided at the lectures and laboratories.

On-campus

Teaching approaches for this unit -- COVID-19 transition period

This teaching and learning approach provides facilitated learning, practical exploration and peer learning. The course is structured as a combination of lectures and laboratories over a compressed 8 week schedule. Students will be introduced to topics via lectures delivered online or in a classroom if permissible. Extended length lectures will be run in an interactive mode for which in a lecture, there will be breaks after every crucial knowledge point so that the students have a chance to interact and ask questions. Additional materials related to practical skills will be further introduced during laboratory sessions where students will work in pairs or small groups in a physical or virtual laboratory setting (via Zoom breakout rooms). Lectures are where concepts are introduced and demonstrated interactively with the class. Students will gain practical experience via laboratories with activities and teacher-led discussion.

Lectures and laboratories

Lectures provide students important network security concepts, mechanisms and computer system vulnerabilities.

Laboratories and lab tasks help students learn the theories and practices of security primitives and protocols related to system and network security.
