Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:17pm)

This unit is one of four core units in the Digital Communication Specialisation and the Multimedia Systems Specialisation in the Master of Information Technology (MIT) and Master of Applied Information Technology (MAIT). It is also available as an elective in all FIT Masters. This is a level 5 specified elective unit in the Master of Digital Communications (offered by FIT) and MTC (offered by Engineering). FIT5012 replaced CSE5302 in the Master of Digital Communications, a cognate degree offered by the Faculty of IT.

It builds upon assumed prerequisite knowledge gained at an undergraduate level in the Bachelor of Computer Science (BCompSci). Specifically in: Networks and Data Communications (FIT1005/2008 or equivalent); programming; algorithms; and in the theory of computation.

This unit provides graduates with advanced knowledge about an exiting area within the field of digital communications, namely coding and compression techniques for video and other digital communications. In addition, coding and compression is an active area of research within the Faculty, and this unit (and the other MDC courseware units) contribute to the Faculty's research-teaching nexus.
