Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (30 Apr 2013, 6:40pm)

This unit is now one of five core units in the 4312 Master of Networks and Security degree. This unit provides MNS graduates with advanced knowledge about a fundamental area within the field of digital communications, namely advanced network design techniques and strategies and performance analysis. Advanced Network Design and Performance are very important fields in IT and are essential skills and knowledge for a wide range of employment. In addition, Digital communications is an active area of research within the Faculty, and this unit (and the other MNS courseware units) contribute to the Faculty's research-teaching nexus.

This unit was previously one of four core units in the Network Computing Specialisation in the MIT and MAIT and an elective in all FIT masters. It was a level 5 specified elective unit in the MDC (offered by FIT) and MTC (offered by Engineering). The unit is the faculty's only unit that concentrates solely on the advanced network design and performance analysis.

FIT5011 initially replaced CSE5805 and CSE5808 in the Master of Digital Communications, a cognate degree offered by the Faculty of IT. It builds upon assumed prerequisite knowledge at the level of an undergraduate introductory unit in Networks and Data Communications, and assumes mathematical background consistent with MAT4003.

Objectives

Objectives (15 May 2014, 2:05pm)

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • explain and construct queuing models for performance modelling of networks;
  • explain multi-access systems including splitting, reservation, and carrier sensing;
  • explain analysis of routing protocols commonly used on the Internet;
  • explain and apply traffic dimensioning for circuit and packet switched networks, including VoIP and multimedia;
  • explain and apply design considerations for local or wide area networks, including GEPON, cable and wireless networks;
  • explain the analysis and evaluation of the operation of a local or wide area telecommunications network;

    Synopsis (19 Feb 2014, 2:42pm)

    This unit will cover network design, performance modelling and analysis. Queuing models (M/M/1, M/M/k, M/M/k/k, M/G/1), networks of queues. Multi-access systems (splitting, reservation, carrier sensing), routing techniques (shortest path, Bellman-Ford, Dijkstra, adaptive routing, flooding). Quality of service (QoS) aspects, flow control, connection admission control and other traffic management functions - ATM, IntServ and DiffServ models. Network topology design and performance modelling, design considerations for local or wide area networks, including GEPON, cable and wireless networks; Introductory probability and graph theory.

    Workload Requirements (22 Jan 2014, 09:58am)

    Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

    (a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • Two hours of lectures
  • One 2-hour tutorial
  • (b.) Additional requirements (all students):

  • A minimum of 8 hours independent study per week for completing lab and project work, private study and revision.
  • Additional/Special Timetabling Requirements (19 May 2016, 11:46am)

    Need a flat room or a studio type for the tutorials and specialized labs for the practicals. Would prefer booking both type of rooms for the full semester, if possible, although there will be only 3 lab exercises, but the assignments are based on those lab exercises which students need to do on their own time.
