Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

FIT4009 Advanced topics in intelligent systems (29 Oct 2009, 6:16pm) [ INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS (29 Oct 2009, 6:16pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

Formalization of existing Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) units and subdivision of the coursework component of the 48-point CSE4300 Honours program into formal 6 point units. The subject is currently taught as an integral part of the coursework component of the 48-point CSE4300 Honours program. No new resources will be required to teach the subject.

Reasons for Introduction (22 May 2014, 5:04pm)

Corresponds to unit CSE4601 in previous BCS (Hons) course code 4608.

Reasons for Change (08 Oct 2020, 4:12pm)

5/10/2018: Update to prerequisites to allow Software engineering students to enrol as an approved elective. Effective 2019.

I have taught this unit in 2008 and 2010, and to the best of my recollection, tutorials were never offered. This is in line with the spirit of this honours unit, which emphasizes independent study, and with the nature of the material, which does not require formal tutorials.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

Updating objectives to learning outcomes for AQF compliance (22 May 2014).

8/7/19: Admin - CE update for semester 2, 2019.

08/10/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:16pm)

This is a fourth level unit for one of three elective coursework units in the Bachelor of Computer Science (BCompSci) (Hons).

Objectives

Objectives (21 Mar 2016, 10:35am)

On completion of this unit students, should be able to:

  1. describe an overview of different technologies that form the basis of intelligent information systems;
  2. explain the capabilities of these methods;
  3. recognise tasks that can be solved with these methods;
  4. judge the limitations of these methods;
  5. apply several standard techniques in the chosen sub-fields of intelligent information systems to the construction and design of such systems;
  6. critically evaluate the performance of these approaches;
  7. compare these techniques to alternative approaches;
  8. explain the practical relevance of intelligent information systems.

Synopsis (29 Oct 2009, 6:16pm)

Methods from Artificial Intelligence (AI) form the basis for many advanced information systems. These techniques address problems that are difficult to solve or not efficiently solvable with conventional techniques. Building on the undergraduate curriculum this unit introduces the student to advanced AI methods and their applications in information systems.

When no exam is given students will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge by solving practical problems and maybe required to give an oral report. This variability is designed to give flexibility to the lecturer to decided the most appropriate form of examination for a given choice of topics.

  1. Assignment 1 - Classification Task and Paper Writing with Latex: 30% - ULO ?
  2. Assignment 2 - Fuzzy Inference System: 15% - ULO ?
  3. Assignment 3 - Intrusion Detection System: 15% - ULO ?
