Reasons for Change (07 Sep 2021, 9:11pm)

Introduced for course architecture programs. Effective semester 1, 2016

4/2/2016: Pre-reqs were omitted in error.

8/2/2016: Admin - fixing pre-req entry as approved at UGPC 1/16 on 4/2/2016.

7/8/17 Changed exam duration to 2 hours to conform with University requirements

27/11/17: The focus of this unit is Database Design (Advanced); so we replace query optimization with advanced design using semi-structured data, like JSON, in order to compliment XML which is already in the syllabus.

24/9/19: Admin - updating the exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

12/3/2020: The current contents are rather old, and need urgent update to cover the current practise of advanced database design. The revised unit will also be offered in a flipped/blended mode.

7/09/2021: Change of delivery structure, focusing on lectures and laboratory activities.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. describe various non-relational database systems, including NoSQL;
  2. compare and contrast between relational and non-relational database design and model;
  3. design database systems using document-store and column-store design techniques;
  4. explain transactions systems in non-relational systems;
  5. implement and manipulate document-store and column-store database systems;
  6. investigate graph model in database systems;
  7. demonstrate graph query processing;

FIT3176 will introduce advanced concepts in the areas of database design, including document-store, column-store, and graph database design; implementations in non-relational database systems.
