FIT3160 is a core unit for the Mobile Systems major offered in South Africa only. The unit will be offered for the first time in 2019.
21 June 2018. Revising Learning Outcomes on behalf of CE to AQF standards as original ones were low level objectives Johan sent revised Learning outcomes and requested to add in Monatar.
24/9/19: Admin - updating the exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

4/5/2020: As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA3160 effective Semester 1, 2021. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made

FIT3160 is a core unit in the Mobile Systems major. Mobile devices have outgrown the PC market, while the knowledge and skills required to understand mobiles differ extensively enough to warrant a unit that specializes in this domain. This unit will be focus on data management for mobile devices. Handling of data within the mobile context differs from how it is managed in the traditional client-server arena.

The Mobile Data Management unit focuses on the implementation and management of content for mobile devices. Persistent and client-side data management, storage mechanisms, as well as data synchronization from different sources, data dissemination, data caching and invalidation are covered, particularly data consistency and integrity, location based querying, query optimisation and transaction processing. Push, pull and broadcast techniques are covered. The unit's emphasis is on mobile data as opposed to the traditional stationery databases.

On-campus
The teaching approach for this unit will allow students to have an initial encounter with information via the prescribed materials for pre-reading, discuss, explore and be quizzed during subsequent classes and lab workshops. This will enable the students to put the knowledge that has been acquired into into practice in a hands-on laboratory environment.
Examination (2 hours and 10 minutes): 50%, In-semester assessment: 50%
Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

(b) Additional requirements: A minimum of 8 hours of independent study per week for completing lab/tutorial activities, assignments, private study and revision.
