Reasons for Change (21 Sep 2020, 10:29am)

Minor amendments clarifying learning outcomes and synopsis as part of a general overhaul of units for Course Architecture redevelopment. Effective 2016.

Minor update clarifying the Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit and Synopsis for consistency with RBL requirements: September, 2016.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (15 Sep 2016, 12:40pm)

This unit forms part of the core of the BICA and in 2016 the BCSA (Honours). It provides students with the opportunity to enhance their research and IT development skills on-the-job in an external organisation.

It supports the BICA learning outcomes of: (4) understanding and appreciation of the ethical and professional issues that arise in IT practice and research, and the importance of adhering to ethical and professional guidelines; (5) ability to participate as an effective member or leader of teams; (6) ability to communicate proficiently to a multi-disciplinary audience by: listening, speaking, reading and writing English for professional practice and to communicate research results; (8) ability to undertake a significant independent research informed by advanced studies in IT including critical literature analysis, choice of appropriate methodology and conducting the research project; (9) strong problem-solving skills, the ability to undertake independent learning and to apply analytical thinking.

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. participate as an interested, active member of a possibly multi-disciplinary research team;
  2. design, organise and conduct innovative information technology research projects;
  3. communicate research findings orally and in writing;
  4. demonstrate ethical behaviour, professional practice and initiative in research;
  5. critically analyse and assess information technology literature.

Synopsis (23 Jan 2017, 09:33am)

Students participate full time in a research and development placement over a 22-week period. Students are required to apply their knowledge, skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviour in a research context. They develop their communication, time management, self-reflection and teamwork skills, experience a professional research and development environment and obtain feedback from supervisors on their performance.

Students will be supervised by a supervisor and will be visited by the CE or academic nominees.

Student will be supervised by a research supervisor. CE or academic nominees for this unit make 3 visits.

Research activities Each student will conduct a research project under supervision in Industry or at a Research and Development Institute. This provides the student with hands on experience in how research is conducted
