FIT3141 is a core unit introduced as a part of the 2010 BSE review, and is intended for second and third year BSE degree undergraduates in the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) for Sem 2, 2011. It is a more in-depth replacement for the earlier FIT1005, which has been removed from the curriculum as part of the 2009 common core review. FIT3141 contains materials necessary for FIT3142 Distributed computing, and useful for FIT3143 Parallel computing. Engineers Australia requires this material for BSE accreditation.

This unit has been established as part of a 2010 review to maintain Engineers Australia accreditation of the BSE degree.

The unit name & abbreviation has been changed from Networks & Data Communications to Data Communications & Computer Networks so as not to conflict with a caulfield unit, FIT1005/FIT2008.

This is a second year level core in BSE, and an elective for BCS and BSc/BCS. Its key objectives are to prepare students so they will: understand networking and data communications.

All students need to have exposure to this topic area because knowledge of computer networks, leads to greater understanding of system integration in distributed environment. This allows designers and programmers to specify, design, develop and debug IT applications and analyse their communication needs.

At the completion of this unit, students will be able to understand and apply:

• network architecture standards for open systems;
• ISO reference and Internet models;
• Internetworking concepts, IP addressing, and socket-level interface;
• fundamentals and technologies of cabled and wireless physical layer implementations;
• fundamentals and technologies of cabled and wireless data-link layer implementations;
• fundamentals and technologies of network layer implementations, packet-switching and queueing concepts;
• functions and architectures of cabled and wireless LAN and WAN, including ALOHA and CSMA/CD models;
• analyse and design LAN architecture for organisational requirements;

This unit introduces students to fundamentals of distributed networked environment. It provides knowledge of internetworking standards and understanding of the networking architecture, technology and operation.
