FIT3138 Real Time Enterprise Systems is an updated version of FIT3012 Enterprise Systems for the Bachelor of Business Information Systems (BBIS) at Clayton Campus. FIT3138 will also replace the existing unit FIT3133. This unit is introduced as a result of the review of the BBIS program in 2010.
Specifically, FIT3138 will be a core unit for e-business stream in the Bachelor of Business Information Systems (Coursework and IBL) at Clayton Campus. The unit aims to improve organisational agility with incorporation of the integration of service-oriented architecture and business process management.
The proliferation of real time enterprises has demanded the need to improve its enterprise resource planning (ERP) effectiveness (accuracy and quality) and efficiency (speed). With the Web2.0 platform, organisations in the emerging environment are already implementing real time business computing of their various business processes. Real time enterprise systems, supported by high speed with high performance parallel processing of multi-module application of softwares will improve the firm's oganisational agility and adaptability to dynamic complex customer requirements.
Large corporations and Mid-size firms have implemented real time ERP. The update of FIT3012 to FIT3138 is timely to improve the employability of our graduates on completion of their BBIS degree of studies.
The unit emphasises the relationship between theoretical knowledge and practical considerations of integrated business processes and IS systems and introduces the integration of real time service-oriented architecture and business process/resource planning and management in enterprises. This unit can also be an elective unit for all non-BBIS students, including students from other faculties.
22 Jan 2014- Modified Workload/ContactHours (bulk upload from CUPID extract). Approved by ADE.
29 April 2014- updated unit objectives on behalf of Sue Foster for AQF compliance.
31/7/2014- On advice from CE, reinstated prohibitions to previously approved version. No changes made to prohibitions.
Sept 2015: This unit has been updated as part of the Monash Course Architecture initiative for implementation in 2016.
20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.
02/08/2021: Admin - adding 'Reasons for Change' for CE - Previously, workload was listed as 2 hours tut/lab; but the special requirement was to have it conducted in labs. This was because we run simulation games (competition based) in some of the tutorials and also SAP exercises in some others, and require a lab space. However, since last year, students can run it on their own device and the requirement for lab space is no longer necessary.
Also, a huge component of the FIT3138 tutorials are run in tutorial mode as students are required to analyse case studies in groups and discuss and contribute their thoughts. The tutor will facilitate the sessions and provide feedback to the students. I feel it's more appropriate to label it as a tutorial rather than a lab.
Sept 2015: FIT3138 Real Time Enterprise Systems is core unit in the BIS major of the BIT
This is a third level core unit of the e-Business ERP stream in Bachelor of Business Information Systems (BBIS). Together with FIT2006, this unit aims to provide students with enough knowledge to enter the real time ERP/Process Design and Management workforce, as well as undertake advanced study/research in these areas.
The unit responds to the present demand in the local and international market for IT professionals with real time ERP knowledge. Working as an IT professional in modern organisations, our graduates require organisational and technological skills. This unit equips graduates with an understanding of integrated business processes and the required technological skills in service-oriented architecture to support such processes. In addition, the unit provides a sound theoretical foundation upon which research activities in the ERP and Process Management fields can be based.
At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

This unit provides both a theoretical and practical overview of Real Time Enterprise Systems. Real Time Enterprise Systems are configurable information systems packages, implemented on-line that integrate people, technology and information processing. The three integrated processes within and across functional areas are seamlessly interconnected and almost time-lag free in an organisation. Topics include systems and technology background, ES evolution, ES lifecycle, implementation and configuration, ES and electronic commerce and ES success and failure factors. The theoretical component will be augmented by detailed case studies which focus on problems faced by real-life companies. For the practical component, laboratory exercises using a well-known Enterprise System will be used to deepen student understanding.
