This unit has been introduced as a 3rd year core unit in the BITS - Netcentric computing and Application Developments and Networks majors. It extends the knowledge gained by students in the core unit FIT1005 in the area of internet protocols, network routing and wireless network infrastructure and protocols.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data. Added FIT2020 as a co-requisite on request from Monash South Africa for Sem 1,2010 implementation. Change approved by Chief Examiner and UGPC.

24 Feb 2012: Removed co-requisite, previously FIT2019 or FIT2020. Added FIT2020 as one of the possible prerequisites along with FIT1005 or FIT2008. FIT2019 is being taught out, and is not retained in the BITS ICT major. FIT2020 is only offered in Gippsland, off-campus and SA. FIT2020 overlaps greatly with FIT1005 and FIT2008, and any of these three would suffice as a prerequisite. On the other hand, FIT2019 is not appropriately a necessary co- nor pre-requisite for FIT3130 anyway. The only snag to consider is if FIT2020 and FIT3130 ever run on the same semester. This has never been true, however, so far. Implementation: Sem 2/12.

May 2014 (Admin note) - Change objectives to learning outcomes for AQF compliance. CE has also changed Assessment replacing the 2 hour exam with a 3 hour exam.

This is a third year core unit in the Net-centric computing and Application development and Networks majors of the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS). It requires knowledge gained in the common core unit FIT1005, Network and data communications.

It provides students with the basics of internetworking and wireless communications, which is one of the aspects of the Net-centric computing and Application development and Networks majors.

This unit aims to introduce the systematic top-down network design approach for designing enterprise computer networks. A top down process focuses on requirements analysis and architecture design, which should be completed before the selection of specific network components. The unit provides students with tested processes and tools to help them understand traffic flow, communication protocol behaviour, and internetworking technologies. On completion of the unit, students are equipped to design enterprise computer networks that meet an enterprise users requirements for functionality, capacity, performance, availability, scalability, affordability, security, and manageability.
